It was late at night and I was having trouble sleeping. I decided I would relieve whoever was on fire duty. I got dressed and stepped out from behind the curtain that separated the boys' beds from the rest of the room.

When I did I noticed that Juliana was on fire duty but Robin sat behind her. She looked up when I emerged from the curtain.

"Having trouble sleeping?" I asked in a low voice in her ear.

She nodded.

"You too?" She asked.

"Yep. How about we take a walk?"

She looked at Julianna, who simply shrugged.

"Alright," she said and let me pull her to her feet.

This time as she lead me through the house she didn't bother to blindfold me. We left the cottage and began to walk along a trail. As we walked I could help but notice how much she reminded me of a rose. Her face was like the petals of a rose, so beautiful that it gave me shivers to look at her. Her personality and ferocious was the thorns. The beauty of her petals drew you in, but when you went to pick the rose, her thorns shocked you. It was the unexpectedness that such a pretty little thing could be so brave and tough. We came across a fallen log and sat down on it.

I'd been here long enough to gain their trust if not friendship. But now, I'd have to sink my hooks in deeper if I wanted to make this work.

"Robin," I began, "I've seen how horrible he treats you. You know we could leave Sherwood. Right now and never come back. Head for Carnen. We could pay back what you owe my father and we could live there. We'd be like siblings," I added quickly. "Life on the farm is tough, but it's also sort of satisfying. You know? A long day of good, honest, hard work just feels amazing."

She opened her mouth like she was going to protest but I cut her off.

"I know he's decent to you most of the time, but he has such a hot temper...Does he ever hit you?"

"No! And even if he did, you have no need to know! So what if we fight a lot? He's a decent man and he loves me!"

"We're friends! I'm sorry if it seemed like I was prying, but I simply want to protect you."

"Is that what you really want, Phillip?" she asked.

"Of course I want to protect you."

"No," she said softly. "I meant do you want us to be friends?"

"I don't know what I want to be," I said with a sigh.

What the hell? I thought to myself. Why in the world would i say something like that?

Meanwhile she was looking at me like she'd never truly seen me before. Well as long as I was headed down this path...

"All I know is that there's things we can't be."

Suddenly I was immensely aware of the distance of between our faces. There was less than two inches between us. I saw her close her eyes and tilt her head just a little. It was an involuntary reaction to copy her. I swear I could feel her breath on my lips when a bloodcurdling scream ripped through the forest. We both jerked away from each other.

"Come on!" Robin said. "We have to help!"

She took off running through the forest. No wonder she was so fast! Running through this was nearly impossible. I managed to keep her mostly in sight, but then a flash came out of the clearing up ahead and lit up the woods and when the flash was gone so was she. I swore and put on a burst of speed. I had almost reached the clearing when something grabbed me and pulled me into the brush. Something's hand clapped over my mouth was the only thing that kept me from screaming.

"Relax, it's just me!" Robin hissed in my ear.

I did relax in her grip and then she released me. She crept forward and I followed close behind. We peered out into the clearing and saw a girl being attacked by the biggest bear I'd ever seen. She already had claw marks across her face and blood was flowing from the wounds. Suddenly another bright flash lit up the world and the bear stumbled back, temporarily blinded. The girl pressed her hand to her face over the wounds and I saw her lips move. When she pulled her hand away, the blood was still there, but the wounds were completely gone. This was definitely magic, though what kind I wasn't sure. The bear lunged again. The girl opened her mouth and screamed, but this time it was words.

"Ci hepi geym ciotv! Sivysp ve vji fytv gsen xjudj aey xisi tqoxpif!" She shouted.

The brightest flash of all shot from the girl's hands and the bear was no more. The was no explosion or sparks. It was just gone. Then girl began to sway on her feet and fell over. We rushed to help, and when she saw us hovering over her, she took a deep breath like she was going to speak, and fainted.

"We've got to get her back to Sherwood," Robin said.

"John won't like this," I muttered, but hefted her over my shoulder anyway.
