I rolled over slowly. Something was tickling my back and there was warmth beside me that wasn’t usually there. I could hear light breathing. Someone was in bed with me. My eyes shot open, alarmed, and then it came to me; what had happened last night. I turned my head to the left and there she was, just as gorgeous after a night of sleep. I brushed a strand of hair off Hailey’s face to get a better view. She mumbled something in her sleep and I laughed quietly.
I shifted onto my back and ran a hand through my tousled hair. I just hoped Hailey wouldn’t be freaked out when she woke up. I was glad it was a Sunday so I could be here when she woke up, otherwise I would have been at work. I snuggled further under the sheets and tried to get back to sleep but I couldn’t get my mind to shut up. Instead, I wandered into my en-suite to pee. I could feel the mild affects of the alcohol I had drank last night; slight headache and the need for a drink.
Checking Hailey was still sleeping; I padded through to the kitchen in my little flat and poured myself a drink of orange juice. Then, I began the search for breakfast. There was never usually much in but this morning I managed to find some pancake mix in the back of the cupboard, which I thought would be the perfect hangover cure, for both of us. She would need it more than me, of course. I wasn’t the best chef, but I managed to figure out how to whip up some pancakes, using the instructions on the back of the box.
Once they were ready, I piled them on a plate with some syrup and chocolate sauce. I placed them on a tray with two mugs of coffee and carried it carefully through to the bedroom. Hailey was still asleep when I walked into the room, so I put the pancakes gently down on the bed beside her, deciding to let her sleep. I tucked into half of the pancakes and turned on my laptop as I drank my coffee. Sitting on the side of the bed, I opened up my emails to check for anything exciting. There were a few junk emails trying to sell me stuff, one from work asking if I’d open up tomorrow and another off my ex, but that was nothing new. I clicked on the title, ‘talk?’ to see what she wanted this time.
She wrote, ‘I know I’ve been a bitch to you, but please can we talk? I’ll come and see you at work one day and we can have a coffee. I really miss having you around. I guess I took you for granted. I still love you Adam. At least reply to this one, even if you won’t meet me. All my love, Meg x’
I sighed and deleted the message. She was such a heartless bitch. She couldn’t just leave and then expect me to go running after her. How did she expect me to get over her when she kept leaving me these stupid emails all the time? To be honest, I was starting to enjoy being single again. Maybe it had only been a few weeks, but I’d had a better time in the last few weeks than I’d had in a year with Megan.
Hailey inhaled loudly and rolled over to face me, her eyes opening slowly. I shut down my laptop and put a smile on my face, hoping she would remember something about last night; about why she was in a stranger’s bed on a Sunday morning. Hopefully the pancakes and coffee would help, along with the realisation that we hadn’t had sex last night.
“Morning Adam,” she whispered with a slight smile on her face. Well that was a good start; she remembered my name.
“Morning, I made you some pancakes and coffee.”
Hailey wrinkled her nose and then laughed. “I hate coffee. Pancakes are usually good but surprisingly I don’t feel too great this morning.”
“It’s okay; I didn’t think you would,” I grinned, “more for me then.”
