Erin slowly opened her heavy eyelids. That was the same dream she had every night - it was the last memory she had with Sophia.
Erin walked down to her living room. "Good morning, sweetie." Her mother smiled, placing a plate full of pancakes in front of her sister, Melanie. She sat at the table in silence. "How did you sleep?"
"I had the same dream again, mom," Erin flopped a pancake onto her plate. "How do you think I slept?" She snapped.
Her mother exhaled. She knew how important Sophia was to Erin. She was her angel. "Why don't you try writing again?" She suggested. "That seemed to help."
"That's fucking stupid, mom." Erin's 18th birthday had passed a few weeks ago and her mother got her a diary, knowing that she wasn't good at expressing her feelings. She glanced at the diamond ring on her index finger before sighing. "I'll be in my room." Erin began to walk out of the room.
"But you barely touched your food."
"Yeah," Erin muttered. "I know."
She covered her face, sliding down the door after she closed it. She reached under her pillow, pulling out the diary. Erin looked past the scars on her wrist, clicking the pen. She began to write.
Dear Sophia,
It's been 7 months since that fucker crashed into you. Each passing day isn't getting any easier like my therapist said it would. It'll start getting easy once I have your remains.Tears fell from her cheeks onto the page. Words couldn't explain how much she wanted to see Sophia just one last time.
I haven't relapsed since I put your ring on. It reminds me that I'm not alone. I still have you.. Even if it's only in my memories. That night, Sophia, I was going to propose to you. We were going to run away and be happy. Together.
I love you. Forever.
xx ErinShe closed the lid of the book before sliding it back under her pillow. No one understood her like Sophia did. They were truly inseparable.. Or so they thought.
It was only 8 in the morning and she already wanted to go back to sleep. A light knock on her door drew her away from her thoughts. Erin stood, wiping away her tears. She opened the door to see Melanie standing there. "I know I'm not Sophia," She started. "But I'm here for you, Erin, you have no idea what pain it causes me to see you so.." Melanie thought for a second. "Lost."
Erin sighed. This again. She knew Melanie meant well, but she just wasn't in the mood. "Mel, I'm sorry for how I've acted these past few weeks," They sat on Erin's bed. "I know you want me to be happy, but--" Erin swallowed down her sobs, sucking back in her tears. "But it's going to take a while, you know?"
Melanie nodded. Though she was only 15, she understood how her sister was feeling. She stood, inhaling deeply. "These dark times will pass, Erin," She said as she made her way out of the room. She stopped in the door frame, looking back at her sister. "Someone will come and show you the way." She walked away, leaving Erin in her thoughts.
Deep down, Erin knew her sister was right. She couldn't be depressed forever.. Right? -- Maybe not forever, but for a damn long time. This was just the beginning of a long, long week.
