We quickly ran around the house grabbing everything we could bring to the hideout. Once we had gathered everything we made our way to the freezer with jackets on because of the cold temperatures. Nona liked to keep it really cold in there. We moved the cart full of trays and unlocked the door letting Raymond in first. I pushed the cart back in front as I crawled in and locked the door behind us. I turned the flashlight we brought along on, and we started our way down the halls of the tunnel. It was pretty cramped, but we were getting quite skinny from the lack of food and large amount of running we'd been doing to hide.
"This is pretty cool Raymond,"
"Yeah, but I'm really scared. What if they find us?" he asked
"Let's just pray they won't,"
We crawled and crawled for about and hour. We took a break to sip a tiny bit of water and munch on some bread.
"Sorry Raymond but no more. We have to save it,"
" I know," he whispered as he took his last bite.
We crawled for another hour and a half until we came to a door. We were exhausted beyond limits at this point, but had to keep going. I unlocked as we passed through. Locking it again I heard Raymond ask,
"Which one?"
"What?"
There were two paths to choose from. I glanced at the key and saw something written on it. It said 'sinistra' which meant left in Italian.
"We go left Raymond. The key says so."
We unlocked the door, walked through, and locked it back up. It was another half hour before we were done. One more door. We opened it locking it behind us of coarse, and stepped into the shelter. There were two beds, a large refrigerator, lots of cupboards, and a table. On the table was another piece of paper, a letter. We walked towards it and opened it up. It read,
Dear Kids,
I'm so happy you've made it this far. Good choice on 'Sinistra'. Your Nono and I built this many years ago for the safety of you two in case of a tragic situation like this. As I mentioned earlier, there's tons of bread and pizza in the freezer. Just let it thaw. There is also water in the fridge and more food in the cupboards. Now, there is a secret escape from here if they find you. The cupboards above the fridge have a lock. All the cupboards have a lock, but these cupboards will take you through another set of tunnels. These long tunnels will take you to and underground train station run by my cousin. There's no way they would find it yet, it's too far underground. Give these two tickets to him and tell him you want to go to the safest place possible. He knows you two, and he'll take care of you wherever you go. Lots of Love.
Sincerely,
Nona
Raymond and I got settled in. He took a nap as I pulled out some bread from the freezer. I explored the cupboards, and found the one that Nona had talked about. I was scared, I just didn't feel quite safe for long.
Raymond woke up. We ate some bread and pizza as I explained a game plan.
"I'm scared," he cried
"Me too," I admitted, "but we can't give up,"
A few more days had passed. Raymond and I were eating some breakfast when we heard voices coming from the paths.
"Now!" I yelled
