"Wait!" Katy called as Cheryl piled her suitcase into the back of her car. She turned around and saw Katy running towards her.
"Oh, hey!" Cheryl said, raising her eyebrows as Katy stood in front of her panting.
"Let's go out again? This week? I'm going home on Friday but I want to see you again." Katy suggested.
Cheryl smirked. "Okay." She replied.
"Great! Have a safe journey home." Katy said, pulling Cheryl in for a loose hug. Cheryl tightened the hug.
"I'll text you when I'm back." She said, getting in to the back of the car, waving at Katy as she was driven away.
The journey felt lonely, it felt long. She watched out the window as they sped down the motorway until they reached home.
"Thanks." Cheryl said as her driver passed her bags to her.
She walked away and slowly headed towards her front door, wondering what mess she'd be greeted to this time.
Unlocking the door she felt her heart sink to her feet as she saw, already, a trail of bread crusts and food on the floor as Buster and Coco hovered around them.
"I'm home." She shouted, impatiently.
She made her way through the house and in to the kitchen, it was 5pm and the mess from breakfast was still on the floor surrounding the table.
"I said I'm home." Cheryl repeated, louder this time.
It became clear that no one was in and Jean had taken the girls out, leaving the mess for Cheryl to clean when she got home.
She sighed but nevertheless, picked up the pieces of toast and the plates and cleaned the floor until she heard the door opening.
"Jean?" She called as she heard her daughter's cry instantly.
"Ella?" She called, leaving what she was doing and rushing into the hallway to see her daughter's bleeding hand.
"What happened?" She asked, darting her eyes at Jean and Ava.
"She trapped her hand in the car window." Ava replied, innocently.
"You never listen to me, why was the window off child lock?" Cheryl asked, frustratedly sweeping Ella into her arms and carrying her into the kitchen.
It was quite a deep cut, and Cheryl recognised she probably needed stitches.
"Ok, A & E it is then." She said, wrapping Ella's hand in two tea-towels and carrying her to the front door.
Jean stood there, idle.
"Come on then, you'll need to drive us there - if you can manage that, that is." Cheryl said, opening the door as Jean and Ava followed her out.
4 hours in A & E passed and everyone was tired and groggy.
Ella and Ava both fell asleep pretty much as soon as they got in the car, 9:00pm was past their bedtime.
"Where did you even go?" Cheryl asked as Jean drove them home.
"We just went out for ice cream after school." Jean replied, innocently.
"Okay, so you thought you'd leave the mess from breakfast for me to clean up as soon as I got back, whilst you went out and got our kids high on E numbers? Then you thought you'd take the windows off childlock and let our youngest trap her hand in it, leading to us spending the day down A & E whilst the mess at home still isn't cleaned up." Cheryl ranted.Jean just rolled his eyes.
"All I want to do is go to bed." She added, trying her hardest not to snap about him rolling his eyes at her.
"Me too." He said.
"But, the difference is, you'll actually go to bed. I'll put the girls to bed, clean up downstairs, make lunch for tomorrow, get the uniform ready." Cheryl said.
Jean didn't say anything.
"Wow, I actually thought you'd offer to help for once." She said, shaking her head.
When they reached home, Cheryl scooped Ella up whilst Jean scooped Ava up, they carried them inside the house and upstairs.
Jean put Ava on her bed and left her room, leaving Cheryl to sort their pyjamas out.
Ava and Ella sat on their beds, in their rooms, bags under their eyes and half asleep as Cheryl rummaged through their drawers to find some pyjamas.
She eventually got some and gave them to Ava to dress herself whilst she helped Ella change into hers.
They got into bed and Cheryl gave Ella a kiss before leaving her room and entering Ava's.
"Night night." She whispered, assuming she had already fallen asleep.
"Mummy?" A tiny voice replied.
"Yes?" Cheryl said.
"Don't break up with Daddy." She said.
"Shhhh." Cheryl said quietly, before leaving the room, shocked that Ava had heard them arguing.
She walked down the corridor to her own bedroom, in which Jean was already fast asleep.
She rolled her eyes before turning around to walk downstairs and clean up.
Suddenly, she remembered she had told Katy she'd let her know when she arrived home, she grabbed her phone and opened it to 3 texts from her, each asking if she got home safely.
She pressed dial.
"Hey, hey, hey I'm so sorry, massive disaster, Ella had to go to A & E, I'm home and I'm good. Well, I'm okay." She said, quickly as soon as Katy picked up the phone.
"It's fine, don't worry. I hope she's okay?" Katy asked.
"Yeah, she's fine, all 3 of them are fine. I'm downstairs cleaning the mess from this morning's breakfast." Cheryl said.
"Why didn't Jean do that?" Katy asked.
"Why doesn't Jean do anything? It's a question that remains unanswered." Cheryl sighed as she looked at the time, it was 10pm.
"I better go and clean up and try and get into bed before midnight." She added.
"I hope you're okay C." Katy said, appearing concerned.
"I will be." Cheryl replied.
"Sleep well." Katy said.
"You too." Cheryl said, putting her phone on the counter and staring at the mess that faced her.
She sighed as she got to work, as usual.
