What is a Mary Sue?
You've probably seen these fan fictions. In these fanfics is the main character ( the MC) perfect. All the boys want her, all the girls are jealous and she has superpowers. The MC is always flawless but describes herself as ugly. This is a trick to make this character more relatable.
EXAMPLE:
My name is Silverstar Annabelle Romania. I am 15 years old and I have long wavy dark blonde hair, sparkling emerald green eyes and full pouty lips. My figure is okay I guess. My curves are one of the things that stand out. I am so hideous you don't have to tell me.Why do people create a Mary Sue?
I think because it's hard to make your character less than perfect. I get it, you want your character to be flawless and perfect. But that's not something that's real. Everyone has flaws. If you decide to create a Mary Sue people can't relate to the character anymore. The Mary Sue. A checklist:
Is your character a Mary Sue? You can check by this list.
- sparkling eyes ( they always have sparkling eyes)
- every boy wants her
- every girl hates her
- or very popular or a loner
- perfect appearance but thinks she's ugly
- a unique name
- has a lot of superpowers
- she can't be defeatedHow to avoid making a Mary Sue
Think of flaws that people have. This doesn't only apply to your looks.
Some flaws:
Being forgetful
Clumsy
Being cold towards strangers
Getting angry fast
Talking too much
Packing before you think
I believe you can find a lot more flaws online. These are just some excample.
Don't make all the guys fall for her and don't make all the girl hate her.
Don't make her too powerfulMy opinion
I think everyone has made a Mary Sue in one of their fanfics/books. You wan't your character to be perfect. When you write more you get experience and you stop trying so hard to make them flawless and I think that's right.
I can remember one of my first fanfics. It was about the sister of James Potter with a lot of powers and I was so proud of my first chapters. I was so glad I made that character perfect. I made that character who I wanted to be.
I believe that we create Mary Sue's because we want to be perfect but we know we aren't so we feel the need to make our characters perfect.
Now I know that flaws create character and if you don't give your characters flaws they're just like those glass dolls. They're are so beautiful but they've no personality. They're all the same. The only difference are the looks but even with the looks they're all the same.
Don't be afraid to try it out. Don't be afraid to write a Mary Sue as your MC in your first book to try but you'll see that you can relate better to your character if they've got some flaws.Well, I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter :3. This is the first rant/help book I've ever made. If you have a subject you would like to read a rant/ help thing over please comment
