Why is this important?
Why are you even asking yourself this? Your character's name defines who they are. Or not. That's up to you, the writer. It's also easy if you have a lot of characters to know who you're talking about. If this is the case it's easier to give them different names:
EXAMPLE:
Hello, my name is Allison and I have 4 best friends: Ally, Al, Alexandra, Alana and Alena.
EASIER
Hello my name is Allison and I have 4 best friends: Christine, Suzy, July and Elena.
Believe it or not, I saw stories with characters named like in the first example. The names looked almost the same so after a time it was bee hard to understand who they where talking about.
How do you name them?
Well, what kind of person is your character? What country are they from? What do their parents do?
Stereotype naming:
The bitch: Tiffany or Britney
The Mary Sue: Ebony Mary Selene Dawn
The nerd: Ally
The Asian: Ling Shi
The rich: Christina
The girl in love with the hottie: Julia
The hottie: Blake, Damon, Chris
These are just examples. It's just what I have begun to see after reading a lot of books. If you don't like stereotypes you could look at a baby name book online or you can google a name generator. Some even give you last names to match.
My opinion
I hate to admit it but in 90% of all the fanfictions the names are the same. It's often just copied and pasted from another fic. Why do people do this!? Please people, it's not that hard to look up names online. Be original!
But watch out for too strange names. I once read a fic in which the MC's name was Starrywater. What? No I'm not kidding. I won't point any fingers but yes. Someone named their character Starrywater. It wasn't even a last name.
In one of my first fics a named my character Jamy. It was a Harry Potter fan fiction and she was the daughter of Sirius Black.
Now I look back I literally cringe. How could I be so unoriginal? One of the stories after that I named my MC Jessy. It was a wolverine fanfiction. I still hate the name but it's not taken from any person in the show.
If you don't want to use a baby name book use names from people around you.
FOR EXAMPLE
A FEW PEOPLE I KNOW:
Girls: Fleur, Suzan, Lucan, Imke, Megan, Robin, Lisa, Nadia ,Emma, Georgina, Romy, Chloe, Anissa
Boys: Dane, Levy, Pepijn, Daan, Camiel, Timothy, John, Christian, Floyd, Sizar
These are some people I know. You can use the names of people you know too.
