When Zevon remains quiet, too, Thana continues with her interrogation.

"As far as partners go, have you found any legacy girls you're interested in?"

"No, but I'm only sixteen! What, do you seriously want me to get married already?" Zevon asks.

"No, and I told you to watch your tone. But it's good to be prepared." Thana replies.

"Sorry." Zevon apologizes softly. "And no... I haven't found anyone."

In this aspect especially, heart breaks for Zevon. I know it's not uncommon for kids to have to hide their sexuality from their parents, but I can't imagine it.

My mom has always been understanding and our household full of empathy. Then again, it helps that she's queer, too.

"Well, you better keep looking." Thana says, ignoring Zevon's apology.

"I will." Zevon replies, his voice small.

"Not like you have much choice out here anyways." Thana sighs. "I suppose we'll put that aside for now. Instead we'll focus more on your powers. Your father and I are going to do an assessment just as soon as we make pleasantries with everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing how much you've improved and how much stronger you've gotten."

Thana steps away from us and adds herself to other vampires.

Zevon turns to me, feeling a mixture of concern, dread, and panic.

"I'll never perform up to their standards." He tells me quietly, despite the sense of urgency in his voice.

I want to say something to help him feel better, but Thana's been carrying something intense about her, and I can help but feel like Zevon might be right, even about having to go back with them.

I turn to him, but he speaks firsts.

"You can't help me with that, Killian... I'll be by myself, I'm... I have no ideas and I really don't want to go back with them. Fuck..." Zevon rakes his hands through his hair.

"Hey, I'll try to think of something to keep you here." I try to assure him.

Zevon nods.

When he wanders off, I feel calmer, probably because most of the anxiety I was feeling was from him.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole situation. On the one hand, I feel bad for Zevon and I want to help him. But on the other, he's been an asshole and I feel he deserves this to teach him a lesson or something.

I sigh.

If only that would actually happen. I already know the the tougher Zevon's parents are on him, the meaner he becomes. But he has a cunning way about it that not everyone can see.

My only hope is that if he does leave, he won't do something even more horrible to Khai when he returns.

I suddenly become aware of Tucker's presence, and I'm hit with a blow of panic. Of all the days, he cannot be here right now.

I close my eyes, mentally tracking him down with our feelings for each other. Once I find him, I speed run to where he is, just outside our coven's hide-out.

"It's a windy day, huh?" He jokes as the wind from my speed blows through his hair momentarily. "You must've really missed me."

"I do, but Tucker you cannot be here." I tell him. "Zevon's parents are here and they're more power hungry than anyone I know."

Tucker stares at me blankly.

"In which case you'd be the power?" I try to get him to clue in. "If they even smell merfolk blood-"
