First Day of School

I walk to the office and get my schedule, great Mrs. Khamp for homeroom, just what I needed.  I've heard she's really boring.  I start walking to Mrs.Khamp's room when I notice a boy stumble down the ramp.  He's coughing up a storm and his eyes are bloodshot.

"Hey, are you okay?" I ask him.

"Uh, yeah, I'm going to the nurses office, I need to go home" the boy says.

He stumbles away and I watch him walk into the office.

"That's weird" I say. "He looks like one of those things on TV except without all the blood and gore."

I walk into Mrs.Khamp's room and everyone was sitting down, while Mrs. Khamp's talked about this school year.  None of the kids are listening anyways.  Then I see him, Kevin, he's just sitting there, doing nothing, so hot.

"Oh hello, are you Ms. Kylie Hudston?" Mrs.Khamp asks.

          Oh shit.

Everyone's eyes bolt over to me, uhhgg really?  I shoot a glance at Kevin, he's looking too, but he's not looking at me like the others.  I push him out of the way and clear my mind.

"Yes, I am" I say.

"Well sit down, Kylie, you're late" she scolds.

I see my girlfriends sitting at the back of the room and smile.  Phew I think to myself.  I walk over to them and hug them and we finally settle down to listen to a boring speech for the next ten minutes.  I take another glance at Kevin, he's not looking at me anymore, but why did he look so caring, so hypnotized when he looked at me.

RING!

The bell rings and Mrs.Khamp dismisses us.  My friends Coleen, Georgia and I start walking up the ramp to our next classes.

"Hey so did you hear about all the crap on the news, about the disease?" Coleen asks.

"Yeah, it was so bloody, it was so nasty, but it's got to be fake." Georgia replied.

"I'm not so sure, I mean, it looked so real, and did you notice how much less kids there are today?  I also saw this kid and he looked exactly like one of those things on the news, he was coughing and had blood shot eyes, but there was no blood" I say.

"I heard that there was a report of one the infected people eating someone else, I almost threw up", Georgia says.

"Almost......Zombie" Coleen whispers.

I cringe at the thought of....Zombies.  There's no possible way it could be that.  Zombies are fake, made up.

"I'll see you at lunch!" Coleen calls.

"Bye!" Georgia wails.  I wave back.

I usually don't take interest in fake stuff, but now I want to know, need to know what is happening.  It's like I feel something is wrong.  I need to call my dad right now.

"Excuse me, Ms. Evans, can I be excused for one moment?" I stand up.

"Okay, Kylie, but you're going to miss what I'm about to say." Ms.Evans replies.

"Thank you" I say.

Until I'm out the door, I run, run to the bathroom, hoping no one's in there.  Thankfully, no one is. I look for dad in my contacts and press his call number.  It's ringing.

"Hello, Kylie?"

"Dad, I don't want to stay at school today!" I whine.

"Kylie. what are you talking about?"  Dad says frustratingly.

"Dad, there aren't as many kids as last year, and, and I saw this kid, and he looked just like those things on TV, I'm scared dad, I want to come home!" I cry.

"Okay, Kylie, I'll come, but this nonsense needs to stop, you're 16 Kylie, and you shouldn't be acting like this.  I will come and get you, but you are going to school tomorrow!" Dad says sternly.

"Yeah, we'll see about that" I mumble.

"Goodbye" dad hangs up.

I hang up my phone, and walk out of the bathroom.  I spot the sick boy I saw earlier stumbling down the other side of the hall again.  He's back is facing towards me.

"Hey, I thought you were going home?" I shout to him.

          He doesn't answer.

"Hello, are you okay?" I shout again.

He still doesn't answer.  I start walking towards him.

I reach out for his shoulder, "Hello?"

The boys whips around, blood spews from his gaping mouth and his eyes, completely lifeless.  His skin is pale and his veins pop out all over the place, except they're not blue, they're black.  He makes a awful gurgle sound, coming deep from inside his throat, more blood spews from his mouth and lands on my cheek.  I scream, not at the thought that this boy is what I saw on TV, but that this boy looks like he should be dead, yet he is walking, and grabbing me?

I yank my arm away from the monster.  I guess that's what I should call it now.  I flail my arms in the air and start running for Ms.Evans room.  I burst in the door and slam it, my breath heavy, my heart pumping as fast as a mouse.

"Ms. Hudston! What is the meaning of this?" Ms. Evans demands.

All eyes are on me, but I don't care.  My eyes are wide, and now I realize that everyone's eyes are focused on the blood splattered on my cheek.  I shake my head, fast.

"Don't go outside!" I screech.  "Don't go outside" I whisper.
