A Little Love in the Gun Shop

We're on the move again, to Mexico.  Hopefully we'll be able to cross the border without any troubles.  Kevin and mom are asleep, but I can't fall asleep anymore.  My mind keeps traveling to the things that eat you alive.  I haven't really stuck with one name for them.  I've gone from zombies, to monsters, to things.  They walk pretty funny.  They stagger and limp.  Each one is different.  Some arch their back backwards or forwards, but all if them walk lifeless.  I decided on Walkers.

Every once in a while, we would pass some walkers.  They would start following us slowly once we passed, but it's no use for them.  I wonder if they have feelings, if they remember anything from there life.  I wonder if they have any sense of humanity, if they would kill a family member who wasn't one of them.  They just seem so dead, but alive.

Dad said we would have to find a gun shop.  We needs guns and amo for the worst cases.  We have some kitchen knives in the back of the car but that doesn't satisfy dad.

"Okay, looks like the nearest gun store is about 20 miles from here.  Most of this area is evacuated from what I heard so let's hope it's abandoned so we don't have to spend our money." dad explains, I'm the only one who heard him though.

"You okay, Kylie." dad asks.

"Yeah, just can't fall asleep" I reply.

"I think I may need to settle down for a nap, maybe your mom can drive, or does Kevin have his drivers license." he asks.

"Yeah I think he does, he's seventeen" I say.

"Can you wake him up before I pass out, hon." dad asks.

"Sure" I say.

I look over to Kevin, fast asleep.  He and mom had been asleep for about 2 hours, but dad hasn't slept at all.  I watch his chest rise and fall slowly with each breath.  I tap him on the shoulder.

"Kevin......Kevin".

I shake his shoulder and he shifts around like a little boy pouting, not wanting to get up like its the first day of school.

"What?" he asks irritated.

"My dad is falling asleep, can you drive?" I ask.

"..... Yeah I guess." he replies while rubbing the sleepys out of his eyes.

Dad pulls over to the side of the road and gets out.  Kevin gets out and they switch.  Dad plops limply into the car and groans in relief.  It startled me.  It kind of sounded like the walkers.  I decided not to think about it.  Dad falls asleep immediately.  He snores softly.  Mom wakes up and just stares at the window like she's been doing ever since I got attacked by the little walker girl.  I think about her, the little walker girl.  She looked about six years old.  I remember looking into her lifeless eyes as she hovered over me trying to take a bite of me.  She was wearing a cute pink dress, but it was splattered with red paint, from the woman who seemed like her mother.  What was her life like before that?  There's some things you want to know but also don't want to know at the same time.  Something like, why is this happening to us?

I pass the time thinking more about what I've seen and we pull into a parking lot.  There's a small shop called Guns. Kevin parks the car and quickly gets out and goes to the back and gets the knives.  Dad decides to stay in the car with mom while me and Kevin go and get the guns and amo.  I was surprised that dad let me go like that.

I get out and Kevin hands me a knife.

"Just in case" he winks.

I smile and we walk to the front of the shop.  It's getting dark. And with the storm coming it's even darker.  Kevin looked at his watch.
