"Where are you taking me?" I asked the officer.
"We're going to move you to a foster home in New York City. It's only about an hour away."
"I never got to say goodbye to Madeline and everyone else!" But then I thought for a second, I don't have anyone else. Madeline was my only friend. Hmph, I thought. What a great life I have...
"You can talk to her once you get down to the police station. We need to record some information before we take you to your new home."
"Who's going to take care of me then? Where am I going to school?"
"Calm down. You'll see once you get there."
I stared out the window only to say goodbye to my old life.
2 hours later
I finally arrived at the 5th floor of the tall building, where I would be staying. I entered the home. To my surprise, it was very roomy, organized, and clean. "Hello there," a woman in her late 40's greeted me with a welcoming smile. She was wearing an elegant but casual dress with her dark brown hair in a tight bun. Her round eyes were gentle and sparkling blue like the summer sky. "I'm Ms. Wilson and I'm going to be your new foster mom." Standing by her were 3 other kids. "This is Kelsey, she's 12. This is Jake, he's 10. And finally, we have Emily, she's only 6. We are all here to help you and take care of you. If you need any help, feel free to ask. You'll be starting your new school next week. Here, I'll give you a tour of our home. You'll be sharing your room with Kelsey."
Later that night, I hopped into bed. Everything was exhausting and for some reason, I didn't feel so welcomed. I felt like a stranger to them, and they felt like strangers to me. I wonder if I was ever going to accept the fact that these people are my new family. I grabbed my iPod and listened to my favorite band, Linkin Park. "Hi Elizabeth. I hope you are having a good time here in your new home," Kelsey interrupted.
"Oh hi Kelsey, I told you that you can call me Liz. I actually am, thank you all for being so kind to me. I've had a pretty rough life. I hope things will get better for me."
"I know how you feel. I've had a rough life too. I heard your father abused you."
"Yes and I've never met my mother. I don't know what happened to her though, my father never told me about it. Ms. Wilson seems like a good mom I guess... Well, I've only known you all for a day. It's going to take a lot more time to get used to this. Why you're here? I mean, like, how did you get into foster care?"
"Well, I've had a mother and father and when I was 6, they gave me up for adoption. I don't remember it much because I was very litte, but they gave me up because they didn't have enough money. They had no choice. But I know that they love me and they were trying to do what's best. I really miss them and I hope one day they will come back to me." Kelsey's brown eyes starting shimmering and turning red. Tears fell from her eyes to the corners of her mouth.
"Aww, I'm sorry about that. I guess life really is unfair. You know, I feel like my life is similar to yours, but different. If that makes any sense..." I laughed.
"Um...It kinda makes sense," Kelsey laughed back. "I mean, even though life's unfair, you have to remember that everything happens for a reason."
One Week Later
Oh wow! I thought to myself. I'm starting school today! I wasn't ready to meet new people. It would just be too hard for me. There were so many things going on in the past week. Anyways, I thought, no one is going to accept me. I was pretty shy but not anti-social. It was surprising. You would think that a girl like me who has been so abused all her life would not want to socialize with others. You would think that I would want to be trapped in my room alone all my life. But I don't. I wanted to meet new people and hopefully accept them in my life. It just takes some trust, but that's what's extremely hard for me to do. Trusting someone.
