I sat down on the stairs in front of the school waiting for Kyle to come. It's been about 25 minutes since the dismissal bell rung. 10 minutes later...no luck. 25 minutes later...I quit. I left the school realizing that Kyle was not coming.
The next day, I saw Kyle at his locker. Furiously, I called out, "Kyle! Where were you after school yesterday?! I was waiting for an hour! You stood me up!" My eyes were fiercely piercing at his.
"I'm so sorry Liz, I forgot I had something else to do...Umm, how about I meet you at your locker today and we can catch up after school," Kyle requested nervously.
"Hmph. I don't know...I mean...fine. But you better be there," I demanded.
"See ya there! Oh, by the way, I'm not going to be at lunch today. I got lunch detention for being late to class. My locker got jammed and I couldn't open it...ironic huh?"
I smiled, thinking about how he'd opened my locker yesterday, because that was the first time we met.
He did wait for me at my locker and I was so glad. "Oh hey! We should go over to the ice cream shop, I'm kind of hungry," I suggested.
"Sure, lets go!" he agreed.
While sitting down eating ice cream in the booth, I was determined to get some answers from him.
"Is it okay if I ask you some questions?" I asked.
"Umm..yeah sure, I guess."
"Why did you leave lunch yesterday? And why were you so surprised about my name? You said I was familiar?"
"I had to leave, because I forgot to turn an assignment in to one of my teachers. Oh, and it's nothing. I might've heard your name before..actually.. never mind. I don't really want to talk about it," Kyle answered hesitantly.
"Well I want to know about it! It has to do with me, so I have the right to know! You said I look familiar? What's that suppose to mean?!" I retorted, noticing my tone was unnecessary.
"Woah, calm down. You know, for someone as pretty as you, you can act a little stubborn," Kyle smirked. I didn't know if I should take that as a compliment or insult.
"Thanks..I guess.." I said tentatively.
"No really. I think you're beautiful. But sometimes you can be a little demanding..."
"Thanks," I blushed. "But it's just that I wanted to know what you were talking about the other day. I'm just so confused. A lot of new things are changing in my life and I just want the answers. Sorry," I admitted.
"It's okay. I know how you feel," responded Kyle.
"How? I only met you yesterday! You barely even know me! No one knows me and how I feel! No one knows what I've been through!" I cried out, holding back the tears. It looked like he wanted to get up and comfort me, but he held back nervously.
"Well, I don't know what to say. It feels like I've known you forever."
I asked the final question. "Are you keeping a secret from me?" I sniffled.
"Am I? Or are you keeping a secret from me?" he joked nervously. "Oh by the way, did Haley tell you what happened in class today?" It was obvious he was trying to change the subject.
"Oh yeah, that was pretty funny," I faked smiled while thinking about how he never answered my question.
He pretended to check his phone even though I was sure no one actually called or texted him, but he said, "Sorry, I've got to go. I forgot I have a ton of homework to do! See ya later, bye!" He hurried out the door, leaving his ice cream and myself behind.
Life is so confusing, and I was 99.9% sure he was holding back a big secret from me and now I was determined more than ever to find out.
