"Calum!" I half-screamed, hugging him. He looked a little startled at first, but hugged back.
"Hey, Elle," He smiled down at me. I forgot how much I missed him. Back when we were younger, we were best friends, we did everything together.
"How've you been?" I asked him. He shrugged.
"Good, I guess." He mumbled, running his hand through his hair.
"Here, you order your coffee and I'll wait in this chair." I said when I saw him looking at the menu. He nodded and got into line. I was giddy with excitement, knowing that I'd finally be able to catch up with one of the only people who ever really got me. He walked over, and sat in the chair across from me.
"So, anything new?" He asked, tapping his foot. I shook my head no.
"I guess not," I admitted, blushing. "I'm still kind-of a loser."
"C'mon. I doubt that! We weren't losers at all."
"Really?" I asked, eyes hopeful. He laughed.
"Nope, we were total losers." Calum grinned. I agreed, taking a sip of my coffee.
I felt my phone buzz in my pocket. It was a text from my mom, calling me back home.
"You know, I gotta go." I said, standing up. Calum stood up too.
"Bye, Elle. Can we catch up soon?" He asked. I vigorously nodded. He wrote his phone number on a napkin and handed it to me.
"Bye Cal!" I waved goodbye. He did the same, and I drove home with a huge smile on my face.

"Isn't this great? Dinner as a family again. I missed my girls under one roof!" My mom cooed. I rolled my eyes. Natalie hadn't spoken a single word to me since I'd gotten home. She hid underneath an oversized sweatshirt, hood pulled over her head. I would've thought a sixteen year old like her would be more bubbly.
Natalie let out a sigh, and flipped her hood back. Her once curly brown hair was pink and black, and she had a three inch gauge in her ears. She had a spike through her ear and black lipstick on.
"Mom, just be quiet. I'm only staying here because you practically payed me to."
"Natalie Victoria Wood! I don't need that kind of attitude around here!" My mother reprimanded, pushing back her chair. She stood, and stared at Natalie. Natalie just laughed.
"Fine. Didn't want to be here anyway." She snarled, getting out of her chair. She tipped her plate over, and it fell on the floor. Peas and chicken went everywhere. Natalie smirked. "I'm going out with my friends. Oh, and someone should probably pick that up."
She left without another word, just a slam of the door.
We ate dinner in silence for the rest of the night.

After dinner, I went upstairs to my room. It was just the way I left it years ago. The turquoise bedspread matched the walls, just like they did when I painted them in eighth grade. It wasn't anything like my house in LA, but I loved it just the same.
I glanced around the old room, smiling at the picture frames of my friends and I. We were all so young then, and most of them were off in college. I secretly wished I could continue my education further than high school.
I reached into my bag and turned on my phone. I had a text from Calum.
Calum: hey elle!! how r u? can u hang out tomorrow at my place?
