I walked outside and waited for my mom to come pick me up. It's kinda embarrassing because most of the kids at school ride the subway alone, but you already know that my dad is very overprotective.

" Honey hop in!" my mom shouted. I threw my backpack over my shoulder and got in. I could have stayed with my dad and waited till he finished up with everything, but I just wanted to go home. " How was your first day of school?" my mom asked with so much enthusiasm.

"Alright, I guess." I wasn't sure if it was good or bad, but I didn't want to tell my mom that. Hmm, I thought. I should change the subject so she doesn't talk about school anymore. "So Mom, how'd you and dad meet?" I quickly asked. This should be a good one.

"Hmmm, that's a hard one. Well you remember back in-" I didn't pay attention to the rest. "Wait, are you trying to change the subject?" she looked at me while it was a stoplight.

"Um, uh, not really, I mean," I took a deep breath before I said the rest. "I like this boy but he's the bad boy of the school and I really don't wanna ruin my-"

" OH SWEETIE WHY DIDN'T YOU JUST TELL ME YOU KNOW I ONCE LIKED YOUR FATHER'S-"

"Alright alright Mom you once liked his best friend, right." I interrupted her.

When we got home I threw my backpack to my bedroom floor and grabbed my diary.

Dear Diary,
Today was my first day of school, and I don't feel like writing because we wrote a whole lot of crap today to the president of the United States, but in short there's a nice rebel type girl named Maya Hart and a bad boy type boy Lucas Friar who I have a crush on. -xoxo Riley Matthews

I then heard a knock on the bay window. Maya is here. What the heck? I opened it. " Hey girl hey," she said to me in a really upbeat voice. I used to be a happy girl in middle school until now.

" How goes it?" I asked, copying what everyone says on my phone game. She handed me a note and told me that it was from Lucas. She then was about to leave until I asked her " How do you know where I live?" I asked slowly.

" Oh my god sorry I'll never-"

"No, I like how someone visited me on the first day of school." I grinned, kinda feeling like I was starting to fit in and have friends.

" Riley, you're such a nice girl and you'll gain more friends as the year goes by. And don't forget me and Farkle! We're always here for you!" She gave me a big hug and left. It felt really good to have a hug from someone besides your parents. I mean I love my parents a whole lot but sometimes it feels good to know someone else cares.
