The strong smell of coffee wafted through the cop cruiser, the soft sound of country music and the buzz of the scanner made Calum smile, looking over at his buddy, Cooper, for the night. "How's the kids man?" He asked, trying to strike up a conversation as he smiled. "They're good, the terrible two's are crazy though." Calum smiled, thanking God his precious baby girl wasn't anywhere near her terrible two's yet, only being born a mere 4 and a half months ago. He remembered the night she was welcomed into the world. It was during the scariest thunderstorm in Sydney, the lights flickered in the hospital right as you pushed her out, Calum considering it a miracle that the lights didn't completely go out before he got to glance at his girl.
"What about you man, Nebraska getting over her ear infection?" Calum sucked in a breath and nodded. "Yeah she's doing better, still sensitive a little bit though." Cooper smirked, before nudging Cal's arm. "How about the sex Hood, 9 months without it can be hell." Calum laughed, taking a sip of his coffee before shrugging. "Better than ever. She's a goddess." "Nice." Just before Calum went into grave detail about sex with his beautiful wife, a sound was heard over the scanner. "Hood and Cooper, we need you at 217 West Grove Road, we have a crime scene for you two to investigate." Calum sighed before downing the rest of his coffee, picking up his radio as he started the car. "10/4." "Let's hit it." Cooper flicked on the lights and clapped.
Calum weaved through traffic, another cop hot on his trail as he took a left, pulling up to the scene where yellow tape wrapped around the house, confused neighbors outside their houses, trying to get a peek at the crime scene. Calum hopped out, clipping his handheld to his belt as Cooper was hot on his trail. "What happened here?" The other officer looked up, nodding to the house. "A guy, who we think was an ex of some kind broke in, went nuts and killed the two inside." Cooper shook his head, already grabbing a flashlight as he sighed. "Did you catch him?" He shook his head quick. "Bastard snuck out the back and took off running. We sent cops and dogs after him though, we should find him soon."
Calum pulled out his gun, sighing heavily before nodding to Cooper. "We'll go scope it out." He nodded, walking away as Calum directed Cooper to go first, since he did have the flashlight. "You probably won't need the gun, Hood." Cooper chuckled, stepping over the broken glass as Calum shrugged. "Can never be too safe." Calum was all about safety, from making sure to hold your hand going up and down the stairs and even making sure the milk was just the right temperature in Nebraska's bottle so she wouldn't burn her little tongue. The house so far was quiet, safe for that matter. "Wait," Calum held up his hand, spotting something out of the corner of his eye.
"Shine the light over there." Cooper shone the light, Calum gasping at the sight before him. "Fuck man." Cooper handed him the light, stepping back as he put his hand over his mouth, fighting the urge to puke. There, was the mother on the floor, blood covering her clothes as the sight was unbearable. Calum put his fingers on her neck, checking for a pulse, sadly not finding one. He sighed in defeat, standing before spotting something in the corner. It was a small crib. He mumbled the words no over and over, before reaching the crib, leaning over, the sight making his eyes water.
There was a baby, had to be a few months old, blood on her clothes as well as she, just like her mother, had no pulse. Calum examined her face, seeing she had a few features like Nebraska, his hand flying to his mouth. The thoughts of you and Nebraska lying dead in your home right now bothered him. Bothered him to the point to where he was literally shaking all the way down to his toes. He backed away from the crib, his heart pounding as he pushed his way from the room. "Cal, you alright?" "I need to go home. I'm sorry." He put his gun back in his holster, handing Cooper back his flashlight as he ran out of the house.
"What'd you see?" "Dead, both of them dead. I need to go home." Calum started running, everyone calling for him. "Hood, where are you going?" "Home, I need to check on my family." Everyone hushed after he said that, Calum slamming the door to his cruiser, slinging rocks as he fled the crime scene. The flashing lights and yellow tape haunted him as he sped through the country roads, tapping his fingers and chewing on the inside of his jaw as he turned into his neighborhood, exceptionally quiet even though it was only 11:30 on a Friday night.
His eyes were pouring, cheeks wet as he pulled up at his dream house, hopping out and shutting the door as he knocked heavily on the door, startling you from the kitchen where you sat, flipping through a home magazine and sipping on some sleepy time tea. You opened the door, gasping as Calum dropped to his knees, hugging you tight as his head was secured tight to your stomach. "Calum, baby what happened?" You were shocked to see your husband home at this time, he usually wasn't back until early morning. You've especially never seen him this upset, aside from the time when you two got married and the time when you gave birth to Nebraska.
He choked on his sobs, his hands secured tightly on your bum, pushing you closer to him as you ran a hand through his hair, looking down at him, feeling your own self get upset. "What happened?" You repeated, hoping to get an answer out of him as he finally sniffled, lifting his head as his face was red and soaked with tears. "W-we had a c-case tonight," He paused, sniffling again before squeezing your cheeks, shaking his head. "We found a d-dead mother and her child, and I had to come h-home to make sure you and B-Braska were safe." You sighed, his had back on your stomach as he continued crying.
Ever since the day he got accepted for the job, you knew he would be in danger every night he left for work. Either being caught in a shoot out or not coming out of a crime scene, you prayed every night for him to return home the next morning safe and sound. "Cal, look at me love, look at me." You removed his hands, tugging on his muscular arms as he stood, still shaking as you sighed, shutting the door finally and pulling him to sit in the chair, your body plopping down on top of his as he wrapped his arms around you again.
"We are okay, I promise you we aren't going anywhere. I hate seeing you like this." You grabbed a tissue from behind you, dabbing at your husbands eyes as he blew out a breath he seemed to be holding for a while, out of his nose. "Cal, you always protect us, why would you ever think you couldn't?" You asked, kissing his nose as you cuddled closer to him. "I just don't want anything bad to happen to the two of you and I would kill myself if I wasn't here to protect you if something bad did happen." You sighed, his eyes meeting yours as you kissed him passionately. "Nothings going to happen, I pro-"
Before you could finish your sentence, a shrill cry sounded from the baby monitor, Calum almost throwing you on the floor as he bolted up the stairs. "Nebraska, baby." You finally caught up to him, watching as he lifted her from her bassinet, holding her in his arms as the waterworks started back up again. "It's okay my little princess, Daddy's got you now. Nothing will ever happen to you." You smiled, leaning up against the door frame as you watched him, Nebraska staring up at him as he slipped one of his fingers into her tiny palm.
He kissed all over her chubby face, whispering I love you's as he did so. After she drifted back off into sleep, he put her back down, kissing her one last time as he looked back at you. "I'm sorry I scared you." He whispered, taking you into his embrace again as he kissed the crown of your head. "It's okay baby, why don't you get ready for bed and get some sleep? You've had a rough night." He nodded, the thought sounding way too appealing to him at the moment as he started to take off his weapon belt, lying it on his side of the bed as he began unbuttoning his shirt.
You went downstairs to lock the door and pour out your tea before running back up, shutting the door to the bedroom, climbing into the bed as Calum stripped down to his boxers, getting in right after you, a smile on his face. "I have something to tell you." You said quietly, his arm settling under your pillow as he pulled you close, kissing your forehead as he sighed. "What is it sweetie?" You've been debating to tell him for a week now, but you guessed now was better than never. "The other day, when I went to the doctor, they told me that i'm pregnant again."
Calum gasped, his eyes shooting wide open as he sat upright in bed. "Pregnant again?" You nodded, smiling as he grabbed you, hugging you tight and chuckling in your ear. "Well looking at Nebraska, we will have another beautiful baby. Boy or girl." You nodded, kissing his shoulder as he did the same to you. "God I love you so much." He said, the two of you lying back down in the same position as before. "I love you so much more. Now get some rest." He laughed, nodding before drifting off to sleep to the smell of your coconut shampoo.
