Regina arranged an appointment with Robin Locksley for Saturday evening. It was the only one where both of them were free.
She looked out of the window, she snuggled into her black bathrobe and opened the door which lead to the balcony. The cold night air reached her nostrils and sharpened her senses. With a yawn she sat down on one of the chairs and enjoyed the view of New York's glittering nightlife. The yellow caps seemed to be everywhere. Lights swished over the highway.
"Mom? Why are you still awake?" Henry asked and sat beside her.
"I could ask you the same" she answered. He was lucky that he had holidays, otherwise she would have told him to go to bet.
She was tired but as soon as she closed her eyes, the thoughts about her job rushed through her mind. And of course the new lawyer crossed her mind again. She wanted to know who he was. She wanted to defeat him in court. Wanted to know his methods to make the most of the divorce for Mrs. Smith.
Sometimes she felt like her work demanded her full attention, so that she was not able to take care about anything else. Or anyone. And that was the point. It was absolutely sickening. She wanted to be a good mother. Wanted to be there for her son as long as she could. He was the most important person in her life.
"Let me guess: One of your complicated cases keeps you on their toes?"
She laughed. "Sort of. Is Marcus Adams a household name to you?"
Her son shook his hand. "No, never heard of him."
"Anyways... He moved to California. We worked on a case together, he was defending the opposite. Now that he's gone, there is a new lawyer who has to familiarize himself with the documents" she explained.
"Okay, but where is the problem?" Henry furrowed his brow in confusion.
"The problem is that I know nothing about him but the name."
"Which is?"
"Robin Locksley. He works for the Sherwood office" she mumbled. She really wanted to win that case.
"How about I make us some hot chocolate?" she changed the topic before she could continue stewing over the situation.
"Sounds great" Henry replied with a grin on his face.
"I knew you would like my suggestion" she smiled and mussed up his hair.
They spent the whole evening on the couch watching movies, eating sweets and drinking hot chocolate. It was cozy and both of them were glad to do something like that again. It had been a while since they spent time together.---
The week went by in a flash. Regina thought it would be more exhausting to have some court sessions and take care of the paper work. But she put a lot of effort in it and did not even noticed the weekend coming closer and closer. Even the divorce of the Thompsons passed quickly. Mr. Thompson finally seemed to understand that there was no way of convincing his wife to reconsider her decision.
On Saturday afternoon, the lawyer stood in front of her wardrobe, not knowing what to wear for the meeting.
On cue she got a message. It was from Robin Locksley.
Good afternoon, Miss Mills. I just wanted to inform you that I reserved table 23 in the Rabbit Hole. I hope you know how to get there.
Sincere regards
Robin Locksley
She knew the Rabbit Hole. It was a small yet fancy restaurant in the centre of the city. The black haired woman had been there for the one or other business lunch.
She texted back, thanking him for telling her and put out a simple black dress which enhanced her curves, but in a decent way.
"Looks great" a female voice came from behind her.
"Tink" Regina smiled and embraced the blonde woman. "It's good to see you."
As they separated, Tiana pointed at the dress which lied on the bed. "Do you plan to go out tonight?"
"It's just a meeting. Business. Nothing special" she responded. "But what are you actually doing here?"
"I was around here to pick up Jake from his football training. So, we thought we could come over for a while."
"Of course you can" Regina answered. "Can I offer you a drink or something to eat?"
"No, thank you. I'm fine. So... How's love?"
She sighed. Tink always wanted to help everyone with everything. Regina really appreciated that she was so kind and caring. But sometimes it was a bit over the top. Besides Henry's mother was not interested in searching the man of her life. Since her last love disappointed her so much she did not believe that it was possible for her to find happiness in a relationship. She wanted to focus on her son and on her work. It made her happy if Henry and her clients were happy.
"I haven't got a boyfriend, if that's what you wanted to know" she answered the question.
"Regina... You need love" her friend sighed.
"And you're going to help me finding my soul mate?" she teased and the corner of her moth found their way up.
"Is being happy such a terrible fate?"
"I am happy" Regina contradicted her. But deep inside her she knew that something, or rather someone, was missing in her life.---
Robin Locksley was already there. Like he told her, he had reserved table 23 for them. He sat with his back to her, so she did not see his face.
The material of her dress clang smoothly to her skin as she walked over to the table. It was dark outside and the lighting inside the restaurant was rather scanty. But Regina liked the ambience.
As she took a seat towards him, her eyes widened. She knew that man! Robin Locksley was the one who bumped into her on Monday.
"You?" she asked completely intelligent.
"You..." he muttered and leaned back on his chair.
Regina crossed her legs and smoothed down her dress. Suddenly she felt very uncomfortable. Without exactly knowing why she had a certain antipathy for the man in front of her.
"So..." he began as the waiter brought them red wine.
She stared at the liquid which looked like blood, smelling the aroma of alcohol. After that she raised her glass in a toast.
"Ms. Mills. Finally a face to the name. I didn't expect a familiar one." he continued and she took a deep sip of her drink. He was British. Regina always liked this accent.
"Indeed. Not one of my favorite moments in life."
"You don't mince matters, do you?" he answered.
She shrugged her shoulders. Looked in these deep blue eyes. She had to lie if she said they were not interesting. There was a clever and kind glance in them. The color was so intensive that she asked herself if he used contact lenses.
"Alright, let's get it over with" she sighed. "My client is convinced by the fact that yours betrayed her with more than just one woman and-"
"Wait" he interrupted her, leaning forward to make a better eye contact. "She is the famous actress Clarissa Smith, he is - well, was - just her bodyguard. That doesn't make sense, Miss Mills. Why would a man like him betray a woman like her? Risking his job, his relationship and the chance of becoming famous?"
"I can only tell you what my client thinks and her opinion is not a secret, Mr. Locksley. Otherwise I won't even tell you because we're both bound to professional discretion."
He showed her an amused smile. Some wrinkles appeared near his chin and beside his eyes. Regina had to admit that it was a sympathetic smile and it looked quite great on him.
"Of course not" He took a sip of the wine and looked inside the menu. "Potatoes au gratin. Sounds delicious, don't you think?"
"The court session is in two days" she said without being very responsive to him. "I think we should talk about the demands our clients make."
"Good point. But before we do that, I would like to order something to eat. Aren't you hungry too?"
She was. Her new partner ordered the potatoes and she decided to take roast apples with honey.
"May I compliment you?" he asked as they tried their meal.
The apples were divine. Sweet, warm and crunchy.
She looked up and waited for him to continue.
"You look much more beautiful when you're relaxed. Not to mention that you seem delighted when you have something to eat."
Did he just tell her she was gluttonous ? But his warm smile calmed her down. He just wanted to tease her, he was not serious with his comment.
"Thank you. I guess" she smiled, taking another sip of her drink. The bitter aroma fitted perfectly to the sweet dinner. It animated her taste buds.
"About our clients" he revisited the topic. "Tell me, what does Clarissa Smith call for?"
"Not much. She says she has enough money, so this is the last thing she wants from her husband."
She took a bite of the apples. Tasted the sugar on her tongue.
"She is not sure but she considers to keep the car. What she definitely wants is the house."
"Car. No problem. I think that's something Mr. Smith can deal with. But the house? I don't think so. And I'm ready to fight for it, Mills."
"So am I, you amateur" she provoked him, stealing a potato from his plate.
"Thief" he countered.
The rest of the evening they argued about the possessions of their clients and talked about their studying. They found out that they both studied at Harvard. But because he was two years older than she was, they never met each other there.
He's not so bad at all, she thought as they paid the bill. But she did not knew either, what exactly she should think of him.So, Robin is there :D I hope you liked the chapter. And I'm sorry that it took so long to update.
