Chapter 13

"You know, I really do hate you right now," Jackie exclaimed as she was currently plastered against Emmett's side. She dug her fingernails into the muscled arm wrapped around her as Bughuul flashed across the tv screen causing her to jump and burrow even further into Emmett's side.

Emmett grinned from ear to ear as his plan unfolded perfectly. "Why?" he questioned sarcastically, "you aren't enjoying this?"

She groaned in response and proceeded to flinch again, as one of the soulless children taunted the main character in the movie.

Emmett had rented the movie Sinister, and had waited till both girls were soundly in bed to watch it. He knew all to well that she would allow him to cuddle and hold her the entire time because her love for horror would win out forcing her to continue watching instead of making out.

For Emmett, it was a win win. He could be close to her without having to worry about hurting her. He had to admit though, had he not been a vampire with super human strength, he was sure the vice like grip on his arm would be pretty painful right about now.

He scooped her up into his arms placing her on his lap when she let out the tiniest shriek possible. She shook her head in frustration.

"This is not like me!" She shouted at him. "I'm not afraid of anything! This is your fault," she said smacking him in the chest.

"Me?" Emmett laughed as he raised his eyebrows in confusion. "What did I do?"

"You've turned me into a wuss!" she ranted. "I've gone soft because I have this incredibly big strong boyfriend."

"Hm, well, I don't plan on going anywhere so," he paused so he could draw her face towards his, "you'll just have to let your big- strong- boyfriend, take care of you," he said in between kissing her.

As the movie had finally ended, Jackie hopped off Emmett's lap and ran to the bathroom. Suddenly a slight buzzing could be heard coming from his pocket.

"Hello?" he answered kind of surprised that one of his family members would call so late. It was Edward.

A few moments later Jackie walked back into the living room. Emmett was still on the phone and he had a worried expression on his face.

"All right," he replied rather reluctantly, "I'll be right there."

"What was that all about?" Jackie asked as she sat down next to him on the couch. "What's wrong?"

"I don't know," he lied. "Some kind of fight between Edward, Jacob and Bella or something like that." He sighed before going on. He hated lying to her and even more so, he hated having to leave her. "I wouldn't normally go, but Ed seems pretty tore up."

Jackie nodded her head, "I get it," she told him. "He's your brother. You should go," she urged him.

"You'll be ok for a bit?"

"Oh my god, Em," she laughed. "I'll put on my big girl panties and be just fine," she reassured him. "I used to do fine on my own before I met you, I'll be fine now."

Lie, she thought to herself. Those were both a lie.

They hugged and kissed, Emmett scooped her up into his strong arms.
Hugging her to his chest, he spoke into her hair, "Just say the words and I'll stay."

"I'll be fine," she insisted and kissed him one more time before he set her down and left.

Emmett met Jasper at Bella's house and they quickly picked up on a scent. It was a vampire, all right, but it wasn't anyone they had smelled before. A nomad maybe, but that was unlikely.

They followed the scent for awhile but it dissapered about five miles south of Bella's house. Disappointed, Emmett and Jasper headed to the Cullen's house. Every one was gathered around the living room trying to figure out who could be orchestrating this.

"Victoria?" Bella suggested.

Alice shook her head, "I would have seen her decide."

"It has to be the Volturi," Edward claimed.

"I don't think it's the Volturi either," Alice replied shaking her head again. "I've been watching Aro's decisions too," she explained.

"So we'll keep looking," said Jasper.

"We'll also take shifts guarding Bella at her house," added Carlisle.

"Another protection detail?" Emmett questioned. Normally he would have been all for it, but this time was different. This time he had a family of his own. He couldn't afford to spend hours away from them.

"Emmet!" Carlisle reprimanded.

"No," Bella came to his defense, "Emmett's right. I mean you can't protect me, watch my dad and search for the intruder."

"And for Victoria," Jasper reminded everyone, as she was still another loose end.

"And keep yourselves fed," Bella added. She nodded towards Emmett, "Plus we've gotta think about Jackie now too."

"I'm not leaving you here defenseless," Edward frowned.

"Well I'm not gonna let you starve," Bella exclaimed. "And I wouldn't be unprotected," she paused, "I- I have..."

"What?" he asked.

Bella quickly called Jacob and he immediately agreed. Edward hated the idea, but it wasn't about rivalry anymore. It was about Bella's and Charlie's safety. It wasn't going to be an easy alliance, but at least now Emmett wouldn't have to spend every waking moment outside Bella's house.

Itching to get back to Jackie, Emmett quickly agreed to take a few shifts at Bella's house and turned to go.

"Emmett, when's the last time you fed?" Edward asked his brother.

Emmett paused for a moment. When was the last time he'd fed, he asked himself. "I don't know," he answered honestly.

"I think you should go hunting with me tomorrow." Edward replied. It was more of a demand than an actual suggestion, but Emmett knew he was right.

Emmett agreed and then quickly flashed out the door.

Jackie stepped out of the hot shower and wrapped a white fluffy towel around herself. She quickly dried her hair, then flipped her head over and scrunched her curls. Checking her reflection in the mirror, she smiled. She hoped her curls would cooperate as they dried over night.

She walked down the hallway to her room, stopping to check on the girls. Satisfied by the sound of heavy breathing and light snoring, she continued on towards her room.

Turning on her bedroom light, she rummaged through her drawers for some underwear and pajamas. Pulling them on, she walked over to the bed and flipped back the covers. She was just about to turn off the light when suddenly she could hear someone banging on the front door downstairs.

Her heartbeat sped up. It couldn't be him, could it? There was no way he found them again, right? She had been so careful. Changing their last name, paying for everything in cash. Even her cell phone was pay as you go, no contract, no bills, no paper trails. She'd even faked their social security numbers and her drivers license.

She slowly walked to the top of the staircase, looking down the stairs towards the front door. She was sure the door would burst as the person pounding on it grew more and more forceful.

Finally getting up enough courage, Jackie made her way down the stairs. She looked through the peep hole, but it was too dark. Jackie reached over and flipped the switch on for the porch light.

Suddenly the knocking stopped. Jackie looked through the peep hole once more but there was no one there. Her heart beat raced and the sound of her blood pumping through her veins was all she could hear. Taking in a deep shakey breath, Jackie flung open the door.
