Esther Chuke (Chook-oo) was born an igbo native. She spent the first 5 years of her life in the city of Nri, Nigeria, one of the most popular cities in Nigeria. Esther had always had a dream to become a fashion model in some sort of agency. She would practice walking the catwalk in front of her grandmother, or she would always be in mirrors. When she turned about 6 years old, she and her family moved to America to find more better opportunities for herself ,like college and a career.
Once Esther had found out they were moving to San Jose,California . She was so elated. She had seen pictures of America but she'd always thought it'd look different in person. Especially California. Beaches,Snow, HOLLYWOOD. She would even get eager even hearing the words "move" or "America".
Her and her family had settled in a nice little beiege stone/stuccoed cottage, about 2 blocks away from the Elementary school she would be going to. She was extra excited about that, Esther had always been nonchalant when it came to big change.
But once Esther started school, it went way differently than she imagined. You see Esther suffered from a mild case of Albinism. Albinism is a defect of melanin production that results in little or no color in the skin, hair, and eyes. Kids would always question her, like "Why are you so white?" or "You look weird? Where are your eyelashes? Are you a boy?". Every grade she would progress, the ridicule progressed with it. more and more questions and even hurtful words would be thrown at her. People would call her "MJ" , or things ridiculous like that. It got extremely bad once she entered middle school.
Now the kids would even start to bully her because of the way she looked. They would verbally abuse her and even physically abuse her. One time a group of girls had hurt her so badly, she had to be hospitalized for 2 days.. She has had to be transferred from many schools before. Probably up to 9 since she'd came to America. She had never thought that people would actually act this way. This was very different from the friendly people in her homeland. People made her feel like she was different. An alien. Now that she is in high school she is starting to feel more differently and everything is changing for her. Things are seeming to get worst because soon after she had started her Freshman year her father had disappeared. No one knows what happened to him.
Though she is slightly used to the bullying. It's still pretty hard on her. Esther is constantly mistaken as a white or so, and she hates it, she is proud of her Ibo background and she wants people to see it. She has gone to many extremes as to constantly dying her hair constantly or even tanning her skin to the point she's had many rashes, but that didn't work much at all. The kids still were cruel to her. Her mother always told her that good people would focus on what's inside rather than the outside. But It seemed like no one was a good person. Just imagine all your life, feeling like a complete outcast. People making you feel like you're an alien. Then you begin to compare yourself to others are you start to agree with them.
Esther is in her Junior year and she has just recently transferred to a new high school about a week ago. Levington High. It seems immediately she was already being talked about at her brand new school. Majority of the kids at her new school would give her funny looks and talk behind her back. She had no friends at all. She had no one to talk to. Her only friend was god, but she even felt like HE was turning his back on her. Why did he make her like this? How is she to go on through life looking like this? Being treated like a piece of garbage? Nobody ever to find out the true Esther?
