It's been a few weeks after Takao's accident and he was finally discharged from the hospital. Upon hearing this news, Midorima went to visit Takao for the 6th time that week.
"I'm here to see Takao Kazunari." The nurse checked her clipboard and smiled up at Midorima.
"Right this way sir."
"Thank you."
They went up a flight of stairs and traveled through the hallways, doctors running here and there. When they finally made it to Takao's room, Takao was all smiles.
"Shin-chan!" He spread his arms out expecting a hug, yet got none.
Midorima stood there looking at Takao like he was crazy.
"Takao, I'm not going to hug you."
Takao frowned and put down his arms, while pouting.
"Why not? I thought we were friends! Don't you love me?" Takao winked at Midorima who flushed pink, making the eagle eye laugh.
"I'm... Just going to leave." The nurse turned around and closed the door silently.
"Bakao! Don't say that stuff in public! It's embarrassing, and we're friends not lovers! Friends don't say that to each other. It's... too affectionate."
Midorima flicked Takao's head and Takao pouted, again.
"Meanie!" Takao rubbed the area that Midorima flicked. There was silence in the room and Takao spoke again.
"I'm sorry Shin-chan." He whispered. Although these words were whispered, the green-headed carrot heard it. The apology was quite random, but Midorima still questioned this strange apology.
"What for? You didn't do anything wrong, it should be that bastard who was driving the truck who should be apologizing." Takao shook his head.
"It's not that. I'm sorry because I won't be able to play basketball anymore, I won't be able to use my legs again or so the doctor said." Takao let out a sad laugh and brushed his hand through his hair. "It's strange you know, I've been playing basketball since middle school and now I feel like a part of me has been stripped away."
Midorima froze in his spot, unable to move. He felt like all air was cut from his lungs. Takao not being able to play basketball? That can't be, they two have been playing together since the beginning of high school. Not to mention they're Shutoku's best duo.
"Shin-chan, don't worry about me too much. And it's not like I won't be there entirely, I'll come to see you practice, watch your games, and try to practice with you. What do you think friends are for?" Takao smiled reassuringly and Midorima nodded grimly.
"Take care of yourself out ok Bakao? If you get hurt again I won't forgive you." Takao laughed at first, the silly nickname, and then at Midorima's serious face.
"Yes sir!" He sat up straight and saluted the green-haired man, while wincing because of the stitches on his side. Midorima nodded and waved goodbye before leaving the room. But there was one more thing he wanted to say.
"Anyways, OhaAsa said that today's lucky item was a friend." He left it with that without seeing, or hearing Takao's reaction to this.
Little did he know that Takao was smiling wider than he ever has probably in his entire life.
