Takao sat in his wheelchair and watching practice making sure to give a thumbs-up to his team mates whenever they gave him a glance.  When he had announced that he was no longer able to play basketball, the team was crestfallen and despaired at the news.

He had already explained to the coach before hand, but mentioned one other thing that he refused to tell his former team mates about.

He was dying.

Not of a terminal disease or anything, but still dying.

Some of his organs were messed up after the major collision and he only had about 6 months until, well, his due date.

Knowing the team was already devastated by the news, Takao didn't have the heart to tell them about his condition.  It would've been too cruel and heart-breaking.  So instead, he'll try his best to stay the same person that he was when both on and off the team.  Optimistic.

Too bad that the lurking thought of death was far enough in his brain to not think about all the time, yet hard to ignore.

"Hm... What should I do with the short 6 months that I have left?" He propped an elbow on the arm of the chair and scrunched his face up in thought. "Maybe I should move to Australia and live my life as a kangaroo." He laughed at his own silliness and frowned immediately.

'But how do I tell Shin-chan?' The thought crept it's way into his thoughts and it disturbed him.  Midorima was his best friend, he didn't want to keep any secrets between them.  Especially now.  Takao let the thought slip out of his mind.

He waved at a passing 2nd year, smiling.

"Yo," Takao poked his head into the locker room and wheeled on in.  "This is just like driving!" He spun his chair around, a full 360, and took a mini bow.

"Takao don't be stupid." The captain said and Takao brought a hand over his heart looking genuinely offended.

"You didn't have to be so rude about it, maybe a nice 'oh Takao, you silly boy.' Would've worked too you know."

Miyaji let out a light laugh and playfully smacked Takao on the head, "You'll never change huh?"

"Not even if Shin-chan decides to dye his hair pink!" Everyone burst into laughter and Midorima glowed a light pink from the comment.

"Takao!"

"Gotta run from scary Midorima!  See you guys during practice tomorrow!" He waved goodbye and hurriedly wheeled away from the raging carrot man.

Since they always walked home together, Midorima wasn't surprised when he saw Takao waiting for him by the entrance with a  basketball in his lap.  He was spinning it on his pointer finger with his face filled with concentration.

"Let's go, Bakao." The sudden words startled the former point guard, making him drop the ball.

"Aww come on!  I was about to beat my record!" He stared at Midorima with puppy eyes that put Ni Gou to shame.

"Try harder if you want to beat it nanodayo." No reaction was shown as he moved his glasses up higher on the bridge of his nose.  Together, they left the gym.  Midorima pushing Takao who was continuing to play with the ball in his lap.

'I should tell him now, it's the perfect time.' The thought came back to Takao and he frowned at the ball in his hands. "Hey, Shin-chan..."

"Hm?"

"I have something to say..." There was a silence in the atmosphere and it seemed as if nature itself were holding it's breath.

"What is it?"

"Well you see..." He paused and took a deep breath. "Do you believe in reincarnation?" He couldn't do it.

"Reincarnation?  Not really, why bring it up all of a sudden?" This conversation was oddly strange especially from Takao.

"I do.  When I... Die... I wish to be reincarnated into something beautiful, like a cat!  And then I could roam the earth as a cat and watch you~" he Lenard his head back and looked up at the tall high schooler.

"That sounds really disturbing and I'll try not to think about it." He scoffed looking down at the smaller man.

"Aww, ok then.  But anyways!  I definitely want to be reincarnated into a cat it'd be so cool!  I'd be a great cat.  You should adopt me." He laughed and Midorima let out the smallest of smiles.  Hearing that contagious laughter was an experience.  It was full of happiness and pure, sheer joy that no other could match.  It wasn't obnoxious like Aomine's, but it was a light, pure laugh.  Something that came out of his heart, into his throat and out of his mouth.

"What would you want to be reincarnated into?"

"I guess I'd like to be a-"

"A carrot!" Takao interjected throwing his hands up in the air after balancing the ball on his lap.

"Takao idiot!  Who would want to be a carrot?  They literally do nothing and their fate is to be eaten!" Midorima flicked the other on the forehead.

"Then you'll be a special carrot.  One with glasses!  And-and you could be dancing!  A dancing carrot with glasses who's mission is to spread the love of OhaAsa to the world!" Midorima smacked his forehead and it took all his will power to not just drop to the ground and wonder why?

"That's so stupid nanodayo!"

"It's gonna happen~" Takao replied in a sing-song voice.  The two seemed really odd to others, one in a wheelchair teasing a green-haired man with no intentions of stopping.  Must've been an amusing site though.

Midorima's house was first, but he volunteered to drop Takao at his house first even though it was farther away.  They talked about random things, yelled at each other, had "inspirational" talks, and every possible conversation you could ever have.  Right then and there.

"Remember to practice!" When Midorima realize what he said the two froze up.  "Ah, sorry.  I mean, rest well Takao."

"... Yeah you too Shin-chan." The door closed silently.

"I really screwed up with that." Midorima whispered to himself while running his hand through his hair.  The walk home was lonely and quiet.  Now that he thought about it, Takao was one of the only positive things in his life. Of course there's his family, Kise, yada yada. But Takao was a different kind of positive. He was understanding and even if you tell him to fuck off, he will do everything but fuck off. Yeah, he's one of those types of friends.

Everyone can rely on him, he was just a bouncing ball of happiness and rainbows (half the school thinks he's tasted the rainbow already anyways). It was just, what's the word, comforting being able to know that there's someone there that has your back and will always have it. Not in a literal sense of course, but still.

Midorima continued walking back the way they came to his house.  It wasn't too far away, he just had to walk a few streets over.  "Reincarnation huh?  Sounds silly."
