No one expected this. Actually, it was even surprising to the doctors, and they were supposed to be the professionals here.
A loud siren and red and blue light could be heard, and seen, in the distance, but no one could've known what happened. How could they? They probably thought someone had broken their leg.
Unfortunately, it wasn't just a broken leg. It was a collapsed lung.
It happened at night. In the moon-phase cycle, that night would've landed on a new moon.
"Ma'am, we need to know whether or not this has happened before."
"Uh, no! He- my son- is paralyzed and, uh."
"Ma'am, please, we don't have a lot of time and we need to know as much as we can."
"My son may be dying! I can't answer these now!"
Non-stop screaming.
Takao's chest slowly rose in fell in near-failing attempts to take in air. It wasn't enough. Pasty skin, dry lips, shaking limbs, closed eyes. Time was running out.
He had these thoughts. Strange they were, but necessary.
"I'm not religious, or anything, but if there's a God out there- please listen to me?
"I know I'm dying, and that I'll probably never see my loved ones again... But let me live for just a few minutes to tell my mom it's all going to be okay. And then add on another day to that so I can tell Midorima I love him. That might be too much to ask, but let them be safe. Let my parents know that I love them and they were the best parents a kid could have. Let my former basketball teammates know that they were the bestest friends a guy could ask for.
"Let Shin-chan know that he was the best boyfriend I could ever love."
The ambulance finally made it to the hospital and the stretcher was pushed, hurriedly, to the emergency room.
A heart monitor was set up and it started to go flat. Desperate measures had to be taken. The cries of Takao's parents were heard as a doctor pushed them back to let them do their job.
To let them save a life.
"Clear!"
Shock.
"Clear!"
Shock.
"Clear!"
Shock.
Takao's still body jumped with every shock. This all happened in the time-span of 3 hours.
Midorima was still sleeping.
He didn't hear the sirens. He didn't hear Takao's dying thoughts. He could only smile because he was thinking of the promise he and Takao made just hours before. Hours before- when everything was okay.
The doctors put away their equipment and lay a blanket on top of Takao. A white light still resides on his face. He's smiling. His parents are sobbing, but he doesn't know. He was able to send his love to his Midorima before it was too late, and that was all he knew.
Some say the brain lives for 7 minutes after one dies. 7 minutes to relive the important parts of life.
Midorima Shintarou. 7 minutes of Midorima Shintarou. Every game, lunch, bike ride. All of them were flashing through Takao's head.
"I remember this one," Takao thought as he happily looks through the memories like a scrapbook. These were what mattered.
One minute left.
The memories vanished and there was nothing, but darkness. A soothing hand enveloped Takao's mind and let him have his peace.
Rest.
Quiet.
Soothing darkness.
30 seconds left.
"Everyone, I love you."
20 seconds left.
"Mom, Dad, I love you, thank you."
10 seconds left.
"Shin-chan,"
5 seconds left.
"I'm sorry, I love you."
Midorima woke up. For some reason, he was crying.
