I looked at the sales clerk as she scaned the various things I had bought for Jerome. Trying to stay away from the one question.
I couldn't avoid it.
"Who's the lucky gal" she asked as she scanned the last item.
"It's actually a guy" I answered her, waiting for her reaction. She just nodded and handed me the flowers and chocolate.
"Well, have a good Valentine's Day" she said as I quickly walked away, trying to hide my embarrassment from the awkward moment.
I drove down the road, counting down the houses until I saw the house I had been to many times before. I stared at his house for a while, trying to work up enough courage to go in. When I finally got out if the car, I held the items behind my back before going to knock on the door.
"Oh, Mitch" Jerome said, looking at me with a small blush. I tried to work up the courage to say the little words, those quick little words that could make this day better.
"Jerome, will you be my Valentine" I asked, hiding my face as I held out the two items. He just smiled and took them.
"Of course I will" he said as he kissed my cheek. I smiled at him, this day had finally belonged to me.
