Chapter Six

Remind Me Of Infinity

November 25

I successfully come back home Sunday morning without my father suspecting a thing. He actually believed I'd spent the night with Aubrey—not that I expected him not to. My dad trusts me, which makes me feel even guiltier when I have to lie to him about my whereabouts.

"How was the sleepover?" dad asks, coming out of his office when he hears me coming upstairs.

"Pretty fun," I lie. "I'm gonna go and finish up my portfolio. I just need to put some finishing touches on a few of my sketches, and then I can send them."

Dad beams at me. "Excellent! You should come show them to me when you're done."

"Sure." I smile at him before retreating to my room. I take out my portfolio from my backpack and sit at my desk. I'm working on a gown that—I hope—embodies the beauty of our skies. The bodice is heart-shaped, and the gown has several layers to give it an ethereal kind of look. I'm still having a hard time deciding what color it should be.

And then it hits me.

I should ask Ryan. I mean it's not like he hasn't offered to help me on this. I could really use some of his biased comments right now.

I take out my phone and text him, asking if he could stop by my house sometime before night falls.

He texts back half an hour later saying "yes."

While waiting for him, I work on my college application for FIT. I have to write six essays for it, and I've only finished two of them. Good thing the deadline isn't until January 2...

For MSU, the nice thing about it is that I don't need to worry about their application until July. But being a person who hates to procrastinate, I've decided to turn in my MSU application the same day I turn in my FIT application. MSU has rolling admissions, so technically, I can turn in my application at any time before the quarter I want to enroll in begins.

A quarter of the way into my third essay for FIT, the doorbell rings. I hear dad call my name, asking if it was one of my friends. He doesn't even bother stepping out of his office, which is two rooms down and across from mine. He's too used to me having friends over.

"It's Ryan," I tell him, as I pass by his office.

"Wait... Ryan Davis?" I hear dad say.

I don't answer him before I sprint downstairs to our front door and open it. "You got me food?!" I joke, when I notice him carrying a reusable grocery bag. He's wearing a white sweater today and skinny jeans.

"More like my food. I didn't eat lunch," he says, smirking. I get out of his way so he can come in. I shut the door behind me, and peer into his bag. My eyes bug out when I see—

"Mashed potatoes?!" I squeal. And not just any mashed potatoes, but KFC mashed potatoes. "Ryan!" I take it out without asking and hold it up to my nose, breathing it in. God, I love mashed potatoes. Ryan knows this, so that's how I know it was for me. He's not much of a fan of potatoes. He's more of a coleslaw guy. "You shouldn't have," I tease.

"Who said that was for you?" he teases.

I stick my tongue out at him and start heading upstairs. "Follow me, loser."

I hear Ryan following me, but then he stops when I hear my dad greet him. "Hey, Ryan."

"Mr. Coleman! What's up?" Ryan asks.
