Chapter 3

I open my eyes and squint at the bright rays of sunlight coming through the gap in the curtains. My mouth is as dry as a carpet and my head throbbing. “Ugh, I’m never drinking again.” I say to myself.

“You always say that.” A voice mumbles from beside me.

I jump and scramble out of the bed with a little scream. I hear a chuckling behind me. I turn and see Jess laid in bed trying to smother a laugh. Her hair sticking up in all directions. She looks as rough as I feel.

“Oh my god Jess, you scared the crap out of me!” I breathe whilst clutching my chest. “What time did you get in. I didn’t hear you.”

“I got in about 4am and of course you didn’t hear me, you were dead to the world and starfishing away taking up all the bed. I struggled for a good ten minutes trying to get you to move your ass over.” she says, yawning the last part.

“How come you got in so late.... Jess, is that a hicky on your neck?”

She rubs the reddened skin and smirks. “I was busy, probably doing the same as you were with the hottie I saw you leave with. You both seemed in a hurry to get out of there, without so much as a wave in my direction either... tut tut, naughty girl marley.” she mocks.

“It didn’t get that far.” I said dismissively. “He freaked out when he found out I was 17 and brought me home.”

“Really!? ok, well my night was amaaaaazing!” she sings. “He knew exactly what he was doing. He did this thing with his tongue where he..”

I held my hand up “Please spare me the details.”

“Just because your night sucked don’t hate on mine.” she sticks her tongue out playfully at me. It makes me laugh.

“Right, what do you want to do today. I need fresh air, this headache is evil. Lets go to the beach. We can call Carrie and the girls on the way and make a day of it.”

“Sounds good” Jess says, climbing out of bed. “But no vollyball today because I’m too sore for strenuous activities”

“ugh, TMI Jess, TMI.” I laugh and head into the bathroom for a shower.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After spending all day with Jess and our other friends on the beach I walk back home to get a shower and get ready for the meal out with my mom. I walk in the house and shout to my mom that I’m home. She comes wandering down the hall with a towel over her head drying her hair.

“Hey honey, did you have fun at the beach?” she asks whilst rubbing her hair dry.

“Yeah, it was great.” I say smiling.

“Ah, that’s good honey. Do you know where the hairdryer is? I can’t find it anywhere.”

“Yeah mom, it’s in my room. I’ll go get it.” I say and jog off to my room to get the hairdryer. “Here you go.”

Mom takes the hairdryer and heads to her room. “Go take your shower and get ready  Marley, we have to go meet Matthew in and hour and I don’t want to be late.”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just over an hour later and we are sat in the restaurant waiting for Matthew to arrive. My mom looks down at her cell phone for what must be the 100th time.

“He text me saying he was stuck in traffic 15 minutes ago. He should be here by now. Where is he?”

I stop playing with the straw in my drink and look up at her. “Mom chill, he’ll be here. He’s stuck in traffic. That generally means that there is a que and just because he sent a text 15 minutes ago doesn’t mean that the line just disappeared. What do you think happened? That the other drivers thought oh well he text 15 minutes ago now that’s it, times up. We best be moving along.” I said sarcastically whilst rolling my eyes.

My mom narrowed her eyes at me. I could tell she didn’t appreciate my sarcasm. “There’s no need for the attitude Marley. I’m going to the bathroom. If he arrives whilst I’m gone, please be on your best behaviour. Your nearly 18. Grow up.” She huffed and stomped away.

“Whatever” I drawled bored and started swirling my straw in my drink again. After a minute I looked up to see where my mom was and a figure coming through the door caught my eye. “yum, love the suit.” I thought to myself. There’s just something about a guy in a suit that makes me wanna drool its just so sexy and this guy looked amazing.

“Would you like another drink ma’am” the waiter asked pulling me out of my ogling of Mr suit by the door.

“Erm, yeah please.” I looked down at my nearly empty drink. “Another diet coke please.”

“And a glass of red wine if you wouldn’t mind” Another voice said. It was a deep masculine voice that poured over me like warm honey. I looked up and found myself staring into the beautiful bright green eyes of Mr suit.... Matt!

“Certainly sir” the waiter said and walked away leaving me staring at him open mouthed. He turned to look and his eyes almost bulged out from the sockets.

“Marley, what are you doing here?” he says wide eyed and shocked.

“Your the Matthew my mom wanted me to meet!... Oh my god! Your fucking my mom!” I hissed at him, trying not to draw attention to us.

Matt sat down. “I’m not fucking your mom, it’s not like that. We’ve just been on a few dates. We’re not exclusive or anything.”

“Do you often pick up other women in clubs when your already dating someone Matt? How many other women have you taken home behind my mom’s back, huh?”

“I told you its not like that and I haven’t taken anyone home... Well apart from you, but that was a mistake and your mom doesn’t need to hear about that.”

“What? Do you really think I would tell her. How would I do that? Hey mom I had mindblowing oral last night with a hot guy I met in a nightclub oh and by the way you happen to be seeing him too.. Yeah I’m sure that’ll go down a treat!” I say sarcastically.

“You think I’m hot and it was mindblowing?” he says distractedly.

I narrow my eyes at him, is he for real? “Really Matt? Thats all you took from that sentence? Why are you even with my mom, shes 37. I thought you’d go for someone more your own age since the gap between numbers is obviously so important to you?”

He opens his mouth to answer and a voice interrupts him. “Matthew, I’m so glad you made it.” my mom call’s to him as she make’s her way over to the table. He stands to greet her, he kisses her cheek as she embraces him. I fume inside at seeing them together. I don’t know why I’m feeling like this. He doesn’t want me, I was a mistake he made that perfectly clear and he’s dating my mom.. This is wrong. I pull myself together and look back up at them. My mom leans a back from Matthew and looks at me. “I see you’ve met Marley.” she says questioningly.

“I was nice mom, promise.” I say holding up my hands and answering her unsaid question. “Can we order now. I’m hungry and I’ve got places to be, so if you wouldn’t mind hurrying this along.” I say pointing at her seat.

“Marley you don’t have to be so rude when we have a guest,” my mom scolds me.

Matt’s voice cut in. “Its ok Kathryn. I’m sorry for being late. Lets order shall we.”

I picked up the menu. The sooner this meal is over, the sooner I can be out of here to go have some fun with Jake and get away from the man that is taking over my thoughts.
