Chapter Seven: Trouble
Marcus pushes me into my father's office and shuts the door behind me. I lean against it, wishing I could seep through it and run away. The two men are standing, arms crossed, by the mahogany desk and staring at me harshly.
I gulp.
"Get in here," Dad growls. I slowly step forward. I stop about five feet from them in attempt to provide some kind of protection for myself.
There is a looming silence that makes the air feels heavy.
"Would you like to tell me what happened?" He asks finally.
I swallow again and look at my feet. I can feel the intense stare of the alphas, and let me tell you it's not something you want to be put on you all at once. "Well, we were walking and... um, talking. And things just got a little out of hand... I guess." I look up at them hesitantly. Dad raises his eyebrows.
"Really? Is that all you have to say?"
I take a deep breath and don't really respond. It's hard to say much of anything when you feel like an ant, like you're about to be stepped on without a second thought.
"Did I not make myself clear when I told you your obligations?" Dad's almost yelling now, edging toward the Alpha Tone that I loathe. "You are to marry this man, to convince our pack that you are in love with him." He takes a step toward me and I feel like I can't breathe. "How the hell are they going to believe that after seeing you treat him like shit!" He screams. I'm on the verge of tears now, and I can't look anywhere but at my feet. "And what the hell did you say to your friend?! Hmm?" Dad continues.
I only sniffle, unable to respond.
"Diana," Levi says in a much softer tone. "What have you told Kim?"
Dad clenches his fists when I remain silent. "Answer me." There it is. The dreaded Alpha Tone.
I gulp and straighten up my posture. I look up at them as I reluctantly speak. "I just... needed someone to talk to. This is a lot to deal with, you know? And she's my best friend, and I didn't really think."
"What does she know?" Levi presses.
"I told her that you're jerk and that I hate you."
He sighs and turns away from me. My father closes his eyes and brings his hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose.
Everyone takes a moment to think.
Levi is the first to speak. "This isn't that bad," he says finally.
We look at him curiously.
"I mean, it's only really one person. Take care of her and just don't let this happen again."
I gasp loudly and bring my hand to cover my mouth. "What!"
Dad extends a hand to calm me. "Levi," he says, "we aren't going to kill any of my pack members."
He scoffs. "I don't expect you to. Bring the bitch over and have Diana explain that she got the wrong impression of me. She actually really likes me and shit."
I glare at him. "Don't call her-"
"Stop it!" Dad shouts. "My daughter, you need to understand your position right now. You are going to do whatever the hell Levi and I tell you, or things will just get worse and worse for you."
I bite my lip and try to calm my nerves. "What do you want?" I finally ask.
"Levi? Do you have any other suggestions?"
He looks at me evilly. "We need to make some changes around here."
"I agree," Dad says.
"What? What kind of changes?" I hesitantly ask.
"Until you can change the way you feel about me, I don't think you need to see anyone. No friends, nothing. Just me and your family and perhaps a few servants. Oh, and no more of that punk you used to call your boyfriend."
My dad nods. I immediately protest, but I'm quickly silenced.
"Enough. This is how things are going to be for a while, until you get used to Levi."
"You're crazy. What - are you going to lock me in my room?"
Levi shrugs. "I'll tie you to the damn bed if I have to."
I shake my head, my eyes starting to water. I desperately fight it. "I can't believe this."
Dad walks toward me. "Sweetheart, this is all for your benefit. You will be the Luna of a great pack one day. These are the steps of getting you there. You're making this much harder than it needs to be." I move away when he tries to wipe the tears from my face. He looks at me for a moment before pulling me into a tight hug. I push at him, but my father just squeezes me. "Please," he says softly. "Try to help us."
He says that like we're a team. As if he's really thinking of me. I scoff, but it just sounds pathetic because of my crying.
When I'm released I go up to my room and lock the door behind me. I slide down it and sit on the floor, wrap my arms around my legs, and cry for a while, not ready or willing to endure the dreaded changes that lie ahead.
