~I like to think that what I am doing could help the people of the future, because right now we live in uncertainty, surrounded by a fog that no lantern can disperse. Humans are made of flesh and bone, but to devils, we are nothing more than Sakura leaves, leaves that can be torn apart with great ease. Hiroshi is strong, very strong-perhaps the strongest Devil Hunter I have ever seen in my life, although it is not as if I have met many to begin making comparisons. But in any case, not everyone is born powerful. Normally, human beings are born weak, and naturally, they die weak as well.

I began this journey with the hope of understanding why these horrible creatures try to exterminate us, but all I have found are incoherent answers, filled with pure sadism and evil. Hiroshi had warned me from the very beginning that searching for an answer was a pointless pursuit. In his own words:

"There is no coherent reasoning for them. They are beings born from and nourished by the suffering of others. They are not beings you can speak to or negotiate with cordially; all you do is waste your time trying. They simply do not understand us, and they do not want to."

Perhaps he is right. Five years have passed since Hiroshi and I began this documentation. We do what we can to travel across the vast territory of our nation while helping people in need along the way. But in these years, I have found nothing that explains why all of this is happening, nothing that helps me understand why devils are the way they are.

I do not know what I should do next. Perhaps the best thing I can do now is continue documenting as many devils as possible, just as I have done over the past years. It will probably help someone in the future. Yes, that is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I am not sure whether I will have descendants. To be honest, I am so focused on my research that thinking about a peaceful life beside a wife and children feels like something very distant, though perhaps not impossible.

We shall see~

Ishikawa Satoshi

"He definitely had descendants" Satomi sighed as she closed the book. She leaned back against the headboard of the bed while processing everything she had been reading lately.

Satoshi Ishikawa, that was the name of her most famous ancestor, or at least that was what she had been told. A year ago, Doctor Nishimura had given this book to her with the intention of revealing part of her family's history, a part of it that she had never heard before, much less imagined. It happened during a time when she had grown sick of all the experiments, where all she did was scream in pain, so she temporarily isolated herself, refusing to participate in any more experiments.
