The night deepened as warm golden light from the chandeliers bathed the ballroom. Nobles gathered throughout the hall in elegant circles, engaging in polite conversation while servants moved discreetly between them.

Adeline remained at Lucien's side as several nobles attempted to approach the couple. Yet Lucien's naturally reserved expression seemed to discourage many before they could even muster the courage to speak. Crystal goblets filled with wine rested in their hands, and from time to time, they took quiet sips befitting the occasion.

Nearby, the musicians continued to play. The gentle melodies of their instruments drifted through the air, blending into a refined waltz. Couples moved gracefully across the polished floor, their steps synchronized with the rhythm as elegant gowns and formal coats swayed beneath the glow of the chandeliers.

Despite the lively atmosphere, Lucien caught the sound of approaching footsteps. Sensing someone drawing near, he turned toward the source.

Cecilia walked with practiced grace, her warm smile never leaving her face.

"It has been a while since we last met, my nephew."

Lucien's expression remained calm.

"Yes. It has been three years."

Silence followed, though neither Cecilia nor Lucien looked away from one another.

Noticing the faint awkwardness lingering between them, Adeline offered a gentle smile.

"It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Princess Cecilia," she said politely. "I have seen you several times before, but we never had the chance to properly introduce ourselves. I am pleased to finally do so."

The simple remark eased some of the tension as Cecilia shifted her attention toward her. Amusement flickered in her eyes.

"And you must be Adeline Wycliffe. House Wycliffe has been a great help to my brother. Your father's rise to the position of Count was well deserved."

She paused before lightly covering her lips in mock surprise.

"Oh my, did I call you Adeline Wycliffe just now? Forgive me. I should be calling you Adeline Valenhart instead."

Her gaze lingered on Adeline for a moment.

"To be frank, Lucien never showed any interest in marriage growing up."

She turned back to her nephew.

"When exactly did you convince this poor woman to become your wife?"

"It was His Majesty's decree, and I chose her."

"Mm. I have been out of touch with the affairs of the Imperial Palace lately." Cecilia folded her arms. "So my brother arranged it."

Lucien offered no further explanation. His silence was sufficient in itself.

"Then I am afraid I fail to understand his reasoning." She tilted her head slightly. "If he is wary of your growing influence, I would argue his authority still exceeds yours by a considerable margin."

Her tone remained casual rather than accusatory, as though she were merely voicing a question that had lingered in her mind.

Before she could continue, another figure suddenly appeared beside her. A young girl peeked from behind Cecilia, her short blonde hair brushing her shoulders as emerald eyes sparkled with mischief. The moment she spotted Lucien, her grin widened.

"Hey, Stoneface. You haven't changed at all. Ehehe."

Adeline blinked.

At first glance, the girl looked remarkably proper, but the playful glint in her eyes made it immediately obvious that she was trouble.
