Lady Diana's carriage came to a halt before the gates of Lucien's estate. The afternoon light gleamed faintly against the polished metal, casting a soft silver sheen over the carriage as the knights stationed nearby approached at once.

The coachman sat straight upon his seat, his posture confident as he addressed them with practiced grace, explaining the purpose of their arrival.

After a brief exchange, the knights nodded in understanding. Their expressions remained stern, eyes sharp and unyielding, as though any wrong move or ill intent would be met without hesitation.

With a low groan, the gates slowly opened, granting them passage at last. The carriage wheels began to roll forward once more as the coachman gently pulled the reins, guiding the two horses ahead with steady breaths.

The manor soon rose before them, tall and imposing. The carriage slowed, then came to a final stop.

Servants emerged from the entrance with quiet efficiency. The butler stepped forward and reached for the carriage door, opening it smoothly to reveal Lady Diana seated within, her posture composed and dignified.

The butler extended his hand. Diana accepted it without haste, allowing herself to be guided down as her finely made shoes touched the cobblestone ground. She inclined her head in thanks, her expression calm and refined.

Her gaze lifted, sweeping over the manor with quiet scrutiny.

A faint crease formed between her brows. Turning slightly, Diana looked to the butler, her lips parting as she prepared to speak.

"As welcoming as this estate is," Diana said calmly, her tone polite and unhurried, "may I ask where the duke and duchess are? I believe I sent my letter well in advance of my arrival."

Before the butler could respond, a feminine voice cut in.

"Good afternoon, Lady Diana."

Diana turned her head.

From the manor entrance emerged the woman she had been expecting.

Adeline approached with measured steps, her silhouette framed by the open grand doors behind her. The blue of her dress caught the afternoon light, its fabric glinting softly as she moved. A gentle smile rested upon her lips, warm and practiced.

"My sincere apologies," Adeline continued, her voice even and courteous. "My husband departed earlier today for a meeting with several of his vassals. In his absence, I will receive you on his behalf."

Diana studied her quietly.

"I understand, Duchess," she replied, inclining her head in a shallow bow. A smile touched her lips, formal and sincere at first glance, though something unreadable lingered beneath it. "I trust you are already aware of the purpose of my visit. If not, I would be happy to explain."

"Yes," Adeline answered softly. "I am aware of your reason for coming." Her smile did not waver. "You are welcome to proceed. However, I must inform you that his meeting with the lords will take some time. Unfortunately, he did not tell me when he would return."

She paused briefly before continuing, a hint of apology in her tone.

"Several of his vassals requested his presence regarding matters concerning the Abyss's activity that could not be delayed." She inclined her head slightly. "I regret that his duties drew him away so close to your arrival."

Diana regarded her in silence, her expression unreadable.

"And for that," Adeline went on, "I would like to encourage you to remain as our guest until his return. The estate is at your disposal, and I will ensure you are attended to in the meantime."
