Trigger warning : Depiction of strong language, abuse, sexual assault, violence.

Maria's POV:

There was so much firing going on.

Every gunshot echoed through the hallway like thunder.

Bullets tore through the walls around us. Smoke and concrete dust filled the air, mixing with the thick fog that had spread throughout the room, it made us difficult to breathe.

I pointed the laser attached to my gun through the fog as I slowly crawled toward the living room.

Everything was blurry. My eyes stung from the smoke, and I could barely make out the shapes around me. Every gunshot made me flinch, knowing one stray bullet could end everything.

Out of nowhere, a hand grabbed my arm and yanked me to the floor.

I nearly pulled the trigger before realizing who it was.

Christian.

"Wha-"

He immediately placed a finger over his lips.

"They're right outside," he whispered.

The sound of boots shuffled somewhere beyond the wall while bullets continued tearing through the room.

We stayed low.

"We need a plan. First of all, we need to get out of here. We need ammo. I also have this."

He tapped the machine gun lying beside him.

"I'll show the way out," I whispered.

He nodded.

The fog was slowly beginning to clear when Christian signaled Fred and Ray to move.

Both of them emerged from cover and silently followed behind us.

My heart pounded in my chest as we moved through the smoke-filled hallway.

The second we stepped out-

"GRENADE!"

Someone shouted.

A metal object rolled across the floor.

We ran.

A deafening explosion erupted behind us.

The blast shook the entire hallway.

Heat rushed against my back as concrete fragments and debris flew through the air.

We sprinted toward the tunnel entrance and slammed the heavy door shut behind us.

The explosion's roar became muffled.

The fire couldn't get in here.

And neither could they.

For the first time in what felt like hours, I could breathe.

One by one, we emerged from the tunnel and made our way toward my car.

Christian and Ray moved ahead while Fred and I covered the rear.

The night air felt strangely calm compared to the chaos we had just escaped.

Christian checked his weapon before loading a fresh magazine.

The metallic click echoed in the silence.

He then handed me the machine gun.

"You should do it."

I looked at him.

There was complete trust in his eyes.

This wasn't just another mission anymore.

We were ending it tonight.
