I took a deep breath before pushing the button for the doorbell. We waited tensely for a few moments before my aunt opened the door. She smiled big at me and then looked confused and curiously at Yu. I noticed the slightest bit of distaste and I knew that Yu probably didn’t even notice it but I did only because I knew what she was probably thinking.
“Come in!” she said cheerily and stepped out of the way for us to get in.
As we walked in I saw her look at me scornful in a way that a mother would a small child when they did or said something they weren’t supposed to. I ignored her and made my way into the living room where my uncle sat with Rebecca on the couch. I felt a twinge of disappointment as I saw Rebecca; I had hoped she wouldn’t be there. My disappointment vanished and was replaced with disgust as her eyes followed Yu alone.
Rebecca smiled. “It’s nice to see you Ashlyn, it’s been a long time.”
I nodded in fake happiness. “Likewise to you too.”
She nodded and beckoned to Yu. “Who’s this?”
All of their gazes switched to Yu curiously and I expected to see him tense or at least a little nervous but if he was either he didn’t show it by even a single movement. “This is Yu. We met on our way to Germany.”
“Is he your boyfriend?” my aunt asked.
“Wait shouldn’t you guys introduce yourselves first before you fire a hundred questions at him at once?” I snapped irritably. I really didn’t like that question for obvious reasons.
My uncle shifted before beginning. “I’m Jared, Ashlyn’s uncle. It’s nice to meet you.”
He stood up off the couch and held out his hand. In a fluid motion Yu shook his hand before Rebecca took her turn. “I’m Rebecca, her cousin and I’m so glad to meet you.” She smiled and shook his hand, hesitating to let go just long enough for me to notice.
“And I’m Susan, Ashlyn’s aunt. It’s nice to see Ashlyn has some friends in Germany. I was afraid she would be all alone in a total different country. At least here she had us if she was in trouble or needed help.”
Yu nodded and they all looked to me expectantly. “What?”
“Is he your boyfriend? We all introduced ourselves so now you can answer the question.” Rebecca explained with an annoyed tone.
I sighed and rolled my eyes but before I could say anything Yu answered for me. “Yes, we’ve been together since the day after we met. It just sort of clicked.” He smiled and I shot him a confused look but decided to play along instead of making us both look like fools.
“That’s nice. I wonder what Lance would say…” Rebecca said half to herself while glancing at me.
I tensed at the mention of his name that way. Like he actually cared. “I doubt he would care… I mean why would he?” I hissed, glaring at her.
She shrugged but didn’t say anything. My aunt coughed nervously and stood up. “I’ll show the two of you to your rooms or room, whichever.”
Grabbing our bags and whatever else we brought, we followed her up the stairs before she turned to us. “Are you guys going to need one or two rooms?” she asked, not meeting either of our gazes.
I opened my mouth to say two but Yu beat me to it. “One.” He said quickly.
She nodded and led us to the biggest bedroom which consisted thankfully of a small couch. At least there was something else to sleep on! I sighed and heaved my luggage into the room and set it down with a thump and finally sitting down on the small couch. I waited a moment after Susan left so that I could make sure no one would over hear what I had to say.
