I shook Yu awake once the plane had landed, causing him to flinch back. He opened his eyes and looked around before seeming to understand why exactly I had awakened him. “Where are we?” he asked, yawning and raising himself out of the seat.

“New York City.” I answered following him.

We walked out of the plane and into the airport where we collected our bags and left. It was a relief to be out of the constantly crowded airport as we walked down the sidewalk towards a nearby motel. Once we reached a small but decent motel we walked in, paid for a room and got everything settled before I dialed my aunt’s phone number.

It rang a few times before she picked up. “Ashlyn?”

“Yeah this is me.” I said and sat down on one of the beds.

Where are you? I tried to call you yesterday but a guy answered and said you were asleep…”

I rolled my eyes catching what my aunt was currently thinking; she had always been one for gossiping and ‘figuring’ things out. “Sorry about that, that was my friend, Yu. I’m actually here in New York City at the moment but I’ll be heading over there probably tomorrow seeing how it’s almost six right now. Okay?” man, I must have dozed off during the plane ride at some point.

Okay, I’ll see you tomorrow then. I love you!”

“Love you too, bye.”

Bye!”

I sighed and hung up the phone, she could really be annoying sometimes. “You might want to prepare yourself for a lot of ridicule, staring, whispering, questions, assumptions, and maybe and most likely my cousin Rebecca will be all over you if you catch my drift so be warned.”

“I don’t care; I get that all the time. I’m guessing your family isn’t the type to welcome bizarreness huh?”

I shook my head. “You should have seen their faces when I came home with my nose and lip pierced. On a weird scale of humor it was hilarious.”

He smiled. “And this Rebecca person sounds scary. Would she still be like that if I told her we were together?”

I nodded. “She wouldn’t care if you were married and had children. That’s just the way she is, of course no one knows it but the younger generation, the rest think she’s innocent and the perfect angel.” I rolled my eyes, “It’s pathetic really. She likes to rub it in my face how I’ve never really had a ‘real’ boyfriend but the way I see it she’s had too many.” I laughed and shook my head.

He shuddered. “Mind if I stick near you while on this trip?”

I shook my head and smirked. “You can anywhere but the bathroom and in my bedroom while I’m changing clothes.”

“Sounds good to me.”

We carried our bags downstairs and put them into the trunk of the taxi before getting in and telling the driver the address. I sat in silence as the driver sped away beside Yu and looked out the window. In a way I was nervous, I didn’t want to end up having Yu driven away from me because my family couldn’t control themselves. I shook my head to clear it before I heard a cough from beside me.

I looked over to see Yu eying me with a confused look on his face. “What’s wrong?”

I shook my head once more. “Nothing, family is just not my most favored thing in life.”

I nodded in agreement. “Things will be fine though. And if not we can always just stay in a motel until after the funeral and then head back to Germany.”
