I don't know what makes people lie. Maybe it's to keep someone from feeling pain. Maybe it's to pretend that everything is fine. Or maybe it's just because it's easier.
"Are you serious?" My dad asked looking over at Riley guilty expression. I knew it was bad, but I felt some sort of control over Riley at the moment. Maybe that's how he felt when he plummeted me to the ground.
I could see the flustered anger in my dad's eyes. It was sad seeing him trying to understand everything. How could this have happened, he must've thought. He had no idea what his son was capable of. Maybe he was beginning to regret even calling him his son. He was, after all, not his.
"Riley, how could you have done this," Lyla said, tears trapped in her eyes. She was in an awkward position, both of my parents were. Son versus step-son. Which side would they choose, mine I thought hopefully. I was the innocent one.
"I know. What I did was horrible and stupid. He didn't deserve this, I wish I could switch places with him," his distraught voice made me remember the brother I used to have. The brother who'd never let anyone hurt me ever because he knew how it felt. The one who wasn't afraid to be seen hanging out with his loser step-brother. Was this the same person I'd known before all of this?
"What are we going to do with you, Riley. I mean how could you have done something so stupid," my father shouted.
"Hey, don't yell at him like that," Lyla interjected.
"Riley almost killed my son, Lyla shouldn't I be allowed to be angry about that?!"
"He's my son too, Steve," Lyla responded hurt.
I could already tell this was effecting everyone badly. I had no control over any of this anymore. I had no idea what to do.
"Can you guys keep it down, I have a headache," I tried to say but my father and Lyla's arguing just grew louder and louder.
"Aaah," Freddie broke out crying. Dramatically, he place his hands on his head and shouted, "This yelling is killing me!"
Immediately the nurse burst into the room and escorted my family out.
"Thank you," I said to Freddie.
"No problem. I hate it when my family fights. You should've seen them on the day of the accident. My sister was practically ready to murder my brother's stupid friends," he responded with a small smirk on his face.
"Do you ever think things are going to go back to normal?"
"When are any families normal," he answered.
