Chapter 1: This Day Bites

An African-American teenager yawns in boredom as he follows the rest of the tour that was being led by a blonde teenage girl in a lab-coat through the science center. He was clad in a blue hooded jacket, black t-shirt with the words "Genius at Birth, Slacker by Choice" underneath it, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. He scratches his short, black hair while looking around in boredom. He absently looks over at a teen wearing an olive jacket over a blue hoodie, a white shirt underneath, faded black jeans, and grey tennis shoes.

"Peter, can we go now? This is so boring." he whispers. The newly named Peter only rolls his hazel eyes in mock annoyance.

"Jake, aren't you even the least bit interested in the studies of Genetics and Radiation?" Jake only leans against the wall in boredom, looking at a tank full of blue and black spiders. He watches with slight interest as one spider's leg was ripped off, but began to grow back at a surprisingly rapid pace.

"Pete, I don't even like school. Besides, you only dragged me to this thing because Gwen is here." He snarks back in good nature, gesturing towards the tour guide who was talking about something with genetics. Jake watches with mild amusement as Peter stutters and blushes, trying to deny it. He turns back to the tank of spiders, tuning out Gwen's lecture.

'Besides, I'm not that much of a science guy. Or a math guy.' Those aren't exactly my strong points.'

Suddenly, he winces in pain and looks at his right hand, seeing a blue and black spider on it.

"How did this one get out?" He mutters to himself, shaking it off his hand. Jake watches as the spider scurries away under a nearby desk.

"Freaking thing bit me." He mutters, rubbing the bite mark. He looks over to Peter, who was rubbing the back of his neck in what looks like pain.

"Yo, Pete. You ready to go?" Jake asks.

"Yeah. Come on. Let's head home." Peter replies. The both of them leave the science center and head for the subway station, ready to hop the train back to Queens. Little did Jake know that his life was about to change from a single spider bite.
