"Hannah are you ready?!" I hollered to my best friend who is 100 meters away from me.
"Yup!" She replied.
I positioned myself on the running block and grasped the metal baton in my hand.
At the moment we're practising for track and field Districts. Which happens to be in one week and I'm really nervous.
"Runners take your mark." Oliver my coach began. "Get set." I lifted my butt up higher. "GO!" I pushed off the block as hard as I could- the baton in hand.
I sprinted passed the group of older guys and saw, out of the corner of my eye, them all watching me. It gave me a boost of confidence which is always good.
One of them I've hade a crush on for a while but he has a girlfriend. His name is Peter. He has jet black hair that is styled in a quiff. Brown eyes, freckles and he's pretty tall.
I shook my head clearing out all my thoughts and bolted towards my friend who was waiting.
I passed the baton to her when we got close enough and then I stopped. I felt the presence of someone behind me. I quickly whipped around to see if there was in fact someone behind me and there was.
"Hey." Peter smiled. I felt thousands of butterflies let loose in my stomach.
"Hi." I replied trying to act cool. "What can I do for ya?"
"You're a great runner." He proclaimed. I blushed a little.
"Thanks." I said looking at my feet. "So are you."
"Thanks." He smiled. "Well I'll see you around." I waved and made my way into the gym to be my book bag.
"Gemma, why was Peter Rowe talking to you?" Britney- the bitchy little stuck up girl asked me.
"None of your business." I snapped.
"Oh, someone's a little moody today." She snickered.
"Shut up Britney." I rolled my eyes. She huffed and marched out of the changing room dramatically.
I slung my red and white striped book bag over my shoulder and walked the way Britney had gone out.
Ironically Peter and I came out of the changing room at the same time. He smiled at me and I blushed. I hung my head and ignored him.
My father was parked in the school parking lot- sitting in his mineral grey Dodge truck. I swung the front door open and placed my bag in the back seat as i plopped down in the front seat.
"Hi." He said looking up from his iPhone.
"Hey daddy." I smiled. The engine revved up and we swerved out of the parking lot.
"How was your day?" My father asked me.
"Good." I replied scanning through my music trying to find a song to put on. I settled on Long Hot Summer by Keith Urban.

"Your phone's ringing." I said to my father, pointing at the kitchen table where it sat.
He slowly got off the sofa and made his way into the kitchen.

It's been an hour since my father's been on the phone. He's been pacing back and forth in his garage with a stern expression plastered on his face.
"Alright... Thanks... Bye." He ended the call and looked me dead in the eye. His face broke out into a smile.
"What are you smiling at?" I asked sounding amused.
