It was the begining of a hot summer's day in District 4. Kate was getting ready for school. The Reaping for this year's Hunger Games laid heavily on her mind. She just hoped no one she loved was picked.
After school Kate rushed home to see her family. Her mother was making a nice soup before the Reaping. When she caught sight of Kate, she quickly went over to her only daughter. "How was school, dear?" Kate's mother always said that when Kate got home. But this time, there was a scared edge to her voice. "Mother, it's fine. I'm not getting pulled for the Reaping."
"Oh, but Kate, you have a higher chance- being 17, an all. I couldn't bare it if I lost you!" She reached up and touched Kate's cheek. "Of all my blessings, you are my best."
Kate smiled, "Oh, mother..." They stood there hugging and crying until the announcement for the Reaping started.
Her mother broke apart, "Alright, Kate." she said, wiping a tear from her eye. "We must go to the square now." Kate nodded her head.
She wished she were younger again.
