When the tributes from District 4 got to the Justice Building, Peacekeepers bring Kate and the Vinecent Dephiro into two different rooms. This must be where I say goodbye... Kate thought as she looked around the rich room. Her mother burst through the door. "Oh, Katie! Where were your friends to volunteer!? Those, greedy, selfish,-"
"Mom! It's alright. I wouldn't have volunteered for them. You wouldn't have let me. They have families too." Kate looked sadliy into her mother's eyes. Her mom shook her head, "You can't do this. You can't go in there and die for the enjoyment of others."
"I have no choice..." Kate felt a tear swell up on her left eye. I can't start crying. Not now. They'll think I'm weak. She brushed it off with her finger and looked at the celing a while. Her mother spoke again, "If you're going to do this, take this pendent as your token." Kate's mom lifted up her grandmother's fish pendent. Its beautiful blue and green gems glittered even in the gloomy light of the "Rich Room".
"Oh, mom!" She took the pendent and hugged her mother for the last time. Their hug lasted until the Peacekeepers took her away.
Kate's next visitor was her best friend, Diana. As soon as she stepped in the room, hey ran to hug. "I'm going to miss you so much!!" Diana said, her voice choked from tears. When the hugging broke apart, Diana wiped her eyes. "I should've volunteered. I don't know how I'm gonna survive without you. Doesn't Disrtict 4 normally have careers or something!?"
Kate waited a moment, sure she wouldn't cry, "One was too sick and the other was training when their footing slipped and they landed on their neck."
"Well that's just stupid!" Diana hugged her once more before the Peacekeeper's took her away.
Diana was her last visitor. She exited the room to see hundreds of cameras, suddenly all aimed on her. Vinecent was also out of his room, but his eyes were on the ground and his face was the same hurt from the train. Is what I said that bad? But she noticed something, Kate only had two short meetings with 2 people. And Vinecent Dephiro was out of his room long before her, by the way the cameras were all over him.
And then it struck her: Vinecent Dephiro had gotten no visitors. No goodbyes. No "I Love You"s. No token. And Kate, once again, felt bad for the Vinecent Dephiro, standing a few feet away from her.
After what seemed to be hours of camera stares, they went on a different train, much faster, to the Capitol. She was given a room in the train and changed.
In her white tee and jean pants, she made her way to the dinning room. Vinecent Dephiro was sitting by himself moving a grape around on his plate with a fork. Loranda came out to join them. "Hello, District 4 tributes! Let me introduce to you, your mentors-" At that moment, a woman about the age of 25 and a man around his ealier 20s came in. Loranda clapped for them. The woman bowed and the man rolled his eyes. "Katherin, this is Abigal. Vinecent, this is Terran."
Abigal walked over to Kate with a halfsmile and held her hand out in greeting. "Hi, Katherin. Pleasure to work with you." Kate smiled back and shook her hand, "You can just call me Kate."
"Alright, Kate. I look forward to mentoring you, I'll teach you everything I know." Abigal took a seat next to Kate and Terran started talking to Vinecent Dephiro. "So you volunteered for District 4, correct?" Kate blushed, either out of embarassment or shock that her new mentor thought she was brave enough to volunteer. "Um, not... exactly. I mean... No." She hung her head in defeat. Abigal was shocked, "Doesn't the District 4 volunteer and join The Careers!?" Kate fiddled with her fingers, "Well the boy tribute was sick all week- fatally. And the girl tribute broke her neck while training, and... she died."
Abigal cooled down, "Oh... I see."
After dinner, Kate, Abigal, Vinecent Dephiro and his mentor all went into another room to watch the recaps of the reapings together. Disrict after District, Kate watched kids like her be chosen and shocked and scared, stand up on stage. There was only one 12 year old this time: Glade Cherridoe from District 5. It was sad to see her family cry like that. But this year, 8 people volunteered. Both District 1: Romaro Monte and Julia Capillo, 2: DeAngello DiCaprio and Angel Frill , surprisingly 3: Closana Wander and Brandon Revs, a girl from 9: Dawna Albern, and a boy from 6: Trander Krilloff Manark, to procect his little brother.
DeAngello DiCaprio and Trander Manark were the ones that stood out the most to Kate.
DeAngello DiCaprio barely said anything and his eyes seemed to glare straight through the T.V. and into her soul. She even saw Vinecent Dephiro shiver.
Trander Kriloff Manark, on the other hand, was thirteen and had 5 sibblings. He was the oldest. When one of brothers were chosen, Samuel Manark, age 12, he boldly ran up to the stage and shovered him behind his hoodie. "I volunteer!!" he screamed. But his face wasn't scared,... it was determined. The face of a fighter. Kate could almost see the fire glaring in his odd golden eyes.
If anyone was too win the games, it would be either DeAngello DiCaprio or Trander Kriloff Manark. Kate was positive.
After the recaps, Kate talked a little more with Abigal and then was allowed to go to bed.
When the tributes finally got to the Capitol, it seemed like an eternity! Kate got off the train with Abigal. "So what do we do first?" Kate asked out of curiosity. Will she meet the other tributes? Does she get a new room? Is it as rich as the Rich Room? When does she get to eat?
"First," Abigal broke the flow of questions, "You'll be introduced to your prep team and stylist."
"Stylist?" Kate spoke the word as if in utter defiance. "Yes! They need you to look pretty for interviews and all." Abigal waved her hand as if Kate should've known all this. "So where will I meet the prep team?"
"In the Remake Center."
The Remake Center. The room itself sounded like a special lab specifically designed to torture tributes.
