Chapter I

I imagine trees, waterfalls, plains, mountains. Sounds like an ideal world, right? Yes, but not the world we live in. War, office buildings, debt. The list just goes on and on. One day, I'll tell myself frequently. One day.

My name is Steve. I'm just a typical graphics designer at Mojang Inc. in Stockholm, Sweden. It pays okay, but it's not exactly what I signed up for. My first day on the job was a train wreck, and the next following weeks weren't too much different. Everyone at my office is a jerk. They get their work done, of course, but clearly it's not their main priority. My pain and misfortune is.

Today was like any other day. I drove up to the studio, casually walk in and pray that no one saw me. I don't know why, but at least three times a week, someone decides to go into the restroom and beat me like a dog. They take turns doing it. Today it was Jeb's turn. Jeb isn't his name; it's Jens. Everyone here has a nickname. Nathan Adams is Dinnerbone, Jakob Porser is JahKob, etc.

"You didn't deserve to be here, Steve", Jeb shouted at me. I wasn't too worried about him. He'll throw down, but he's more talk than attack. I took a few kicks to the shin and a blow to the chest, and that was it. Tomorrow would be Dinnerbone's chance to attack me. He's the one I'm scared of the most. I lost a molar to him once.

I wanted to get out. I hated my life here. I couldn't afford a lawyer, and I was too scared to tell anyone about this. That, and I'm an adult and I should be able to handle it on my own. If only the world was more like a sanctuary of cubes that make up beautiful landscapes and oceans. You'd mine, and craft, but I didn't know what to call my world. Mine....craft? Minecraft? That sounded right, but I wanted it to sound more like a name of a planet. Minecraftia? That had a nice ring to it.

Jeb left after some time, and I was more than grateful for it. I washed up before heading back to my cubicle. I took a glance in the mirror and saw a bright purple light flicker from a stall. Then I saw another. And another. I felt an urge to go towards it. So I did.

I slowly opened up the stall door and was amazed at what I saw. It was a....actually I had no idea what the heck that thing was. It was a portal, I think. It was the same shade of purple as the flickers of lights. I stuck my hand through it. I tried getting it out, but it was stuck. I was done for and I knew it. So I did the only thing I could do.

   I jumped through the portal.
