Chapter III

I had no idea just how far away I was from home, but I couldn't see the plains where my house was built. I was carrying Alex on my back; she was asleep. I was climbing up a mountain when my foot got caught on something. I looked down, and it seemed to be a pressure plate made of stone. How did that get there? I certainly didn't put that there, and Alex most likely didn't either. I took my foot off and I saw a small portion of the mountain open up.

Inside the hole in the mountain was a chest. I made sure Alex was still asleep (which, thankfully, she was) and I opened the chest. Inside it lay a book. I took it out and put it in my inventory. I would read it when I got home.

It was evening by the time I made it home. Alex had just woken up. We got inside before the monsters came out. Alex went to sleep, and I sat on the edge of my bed reading the book. It was a journal, written by someone named "Herobrine". I wondered who he was. Maybe he was in the world too.

"Beware," the book read. "There are mobs everywhere. Kill them, but look out for Endermen. Just don't look into their eyes. Harvest the Ender pearls." This was rather interesting. But what the heck was an Enderman? Maybe they were those tall, black figures with purple eyes I saw last night. I didn't bother to kill them. They looked dangerous.

I learned a lot from that book. I learned I could go home, even though I didn't really want to. If I mixed an Ender pearl with powder from a Blaze (whatever that is) I could locate an underground castle called a "stronghold" and slay the Ender dragon. I don't know what I do after killing the dragon, because the words "continued in next book" were written after that part.

Several yards away, through all the monsters and trees, I saw a pair of glowing lights. What were they? Eyes? Nah, that's ridiculous. I looked over at Alex. She was out like a light. I looked back over at the glowing things. With further investigation, I saw that they were eyes. On a human, too. I didn't know if I should run toward it or not. It was just standing there, like it was having a staring contest with my house.

I didn't know it then, but that person was Herobrine.
