FOURTEEN: HATE TO SEE YOUR HEART BREAK
•
The two grab a taxi and get a ride off to Fisherman's Wharf, my favorite tourist spot. I always found the Golden Gate Bridge to be very boring and plain Jane.
We walk down the pier. The weather is windy and cool, but the sun was still shining, average San Francisco weather. "There's Alcatraz, the prison that was said to be inescapable. Al Capone, the famous gangster was sent there." I explain to Ryder pointing to the lone island.
"Riley, I know what Alcatraz is. I'm pretty sure everyone knows." Ryder replies giving a little giggle. He was holding an ice cream cone that held his favorite ice cream, mint chocolate chip.
The wind was blowing in my face causing my loose hair to get in my mouth. I spit and laugh, "Ugh, I hate the wind." I mutter pulling my hair out of my mouth.
"It's fine Riles, now how about we play in the arcade. How about a little air hockey match?" Ryder suggests while wiggling his eyebrows. I smile and intertwine his hand with mine dragging him through the crowded pier to the arcade.
While we were playing in the arcade, I imagined what kind of relationship one would have with this particular Friar. It would be one where they would act like your best friend and be funny and could call each other silly names. At the end of the day, you guys could snuggle together watching a movie that you both decide on while munching on some Chinese food. He would always make sure you guys would have the greatest times and there would be fights on the stupidest things like how Stiles is better than Scott vice versa.
As we walk down the pier during lunch, I spot someone. Like it was someone I knew. I start to run towards them dragging me Ryder along with me. "Heath?" I ask. The boy turns around and I was right, it was Heath Whethers. My childhood crush before Miles. Even though, we didn't talk much he knew about Miles and my problems. He was his Californian best friend for the heck of it. Heath turns around and notices me, his hair is now shaggy and covers his forehead.
He smiles and runs up and gives me a hug "Riley Matthews," He announces. "What brings you to this fine California day?" He wonders. He was one of the only people who I told about my move.
I return the smile, "The Friars, the family I'm staying here, decided to go here for vacation," I answer back. "This is Ryder, and Ryder this is Heath Whethers." I introduce them. They give each other an awkward bro hug. "But what are you doing here, H? You usually don't go to this part of the city."
Heath shrugged, "I needed a day off from the real world. This is my escape. So are you guys like dating?" Heath asks noticing that our hands were formally intertwined.
This time I shrugged, "We just needed a day off from the Friar world, so I thought I would take him to the pier." I explain once again moving my hair back. Ryder's face turns grim, I didn't mean to offend him. "But we are on a date." I finish with a smile hoping Ryder would feel better.
"Sounds lovely, you guys. I got to go, Karma's waiting for me." Heath waves goodbye and walks over to a booth where his long time girlfriend awaits. His girlfriend never liked me, maybe it was because we spent a lot of time together after Miles left or maybe because she's a bitch. I never understand how a guy like Heath could date a guy like Karma Harrison.
Ryder and I intertwine fingers once again and drag each other along the crowded pier to find crepes.
