"Oh you're awake,"
Mom's eyes fluttered opened, it took her seconds to adjust to the lighting. And before I knew it she reached for my face, "What's wrong baby?"
Her touch made me crumbled, like warm fire sizzling straight and then expanse inside me. In a way it was warming yet at the same time it amplified my awareness to what had just been a numbed emotion. Instantly I felt my eyes welled up.
"Mom.." my voice shook.
"It's about that guy isn't it?" Mom knew about Adam, I didn't tell her the details or anything specific that I knew would be Adam's secret to tell but she knew the gist of it.
"He didn't show up yesterday," I referred to last night at the park. I had waited until midnight but he didn't come.
"Give it time honey, he needs time."
"But I was scared what if.." my voice shook and before I knew it I started hyperventilating.
Mom snapped, "Listen to me, he's not Ivy."
I tried to focus on Mom's voice, "He's not Ivy. He's not Ivy, " I repeated after her.
I felt my heart beat slowed down but the thought of Ivy only made my chest burnt. Burnt with her face, burnt with the memory of her and what used to be her smile.
"Darling, Ivy.. It was never your fault you know it don't you? She was the only one that could save herself."
I knew she meant well but I didn't want her to tell me it wasn't my fault because I was her best friend. I was supposed to notice before it was too late.
Best friend helps each other. We used to say that phrase. And I failed her. I failed her.
"Honey, saving other's isn't an obligation. You have tried your best to help him. That was already more than enough. He's the only person who can save himself. If you think saving Adam can make you feel better about Ivy,it won't. You don't need to save Adam to be able to forgive yourself. It won't help you any better. It wasn't Adam who you owe your forgiveness to, neither was it Ivy. It was you. You are the person you need to forgive."
"Haven't you have forgiven yourself?" She finally smiled. It made me recalled the long hours at the therapist office. Months it took me after Ivy's death to recover.
I didn't have the heart to tell her, I didn't think so anymore.
Author's Note:
Thank you so much for the votes and for reading my story so far! I honestly appreciate all the votes and comments.
So surprise! I finally revealed some light into the story. Yes, if you haven't guessed it by now in a way it was Ivy's death that pushed Summer's stubbornness to help Adam to the point of stalking him. While Summer didn't realised it her mother was afraid she was using Adam to make up for what Summer believed was her mistake.
Sorry it took me long to update! I'll update faster for the next chapter
