That night, with unanswered questions haunting my mind and pain consuming every inch of my body, sleep finally claims me.
At midnight, I wake to the faint sound of metal clinking against metal.
A figure is leaning over me. My heart lurches. Before my mind can catch up, my body reacts on instinct. My fingers shoot toward the small pair of scissors resting on the side table.
I grab them. Ignoring the sharp pull in my waist, I force myself upright just enough to press the pointed edge toward the shadow hovering above me.
"Don't.."
The figure freezes. My breathing turns ragged. Every muscle in my body screams in protest, but I refuse to lower the scissors. Not until I know who it is. Then the light catches his face.
A doctor.
I blink. The fear still pounding inside my chest slowly gives way to embarrassment.
"Sorry, doctor, it's just.." I stammer, lowering the scissors. "I thought.."
He doesn't even let me finish.
"It's okay, I understand," he says quickly. His voice is calm...
But the fear in his eyes is impossible to miss. He takes a careful step back before gesturing toward the bed.
"Please... lie down."
I slowly lower myself back onto the mattress, trying not to wince as another wave of pain shoots through my waist.
Only then do I look beyond him.
My breath catches.
Shivaay.
He's standing a few feet away. His arms are crossed over his chest. His expression is unreadable.
Cold.
Empty.
Not a single emotion flickers across his face.
He doesn't speak, doesn't move, simply watches me. Like a silent judge waiting for the right moment to deliver a sentence. A nurse stands quietly beside him, clutching a tray of medicines.
Arjun waits near the open door.
Outside...
Two guards stand on either side of the entrance, their expressions hard and alert. For a brief second, I wonder if they're guarding me... Or making sure I don't leave.
The doctor clears his throat, pulling my attention back to him.
"Um... are you feeling any discomfort in other body parts, except your waist?"
"No," I answer.
He nods before continuing. "Can you move your legs?"
Before touching me, he instinctively glances toward Shivaay. Just one quick look. A silent request for permission.
