Chapter 5: The diary of a broken heart
The two stood silently in the doorway of Lisa’s apartment, both hesitant to venture any further. Tears still swelled up in her eyes as she tried to regain her composer before confronting her grandmother, as not to give reason for concern or misjudgment. She already felt embarrassed for her previous encounters and didn’t want Tim to think any lesser about her family. In truth the thought never occurred to him as he knew from his own experiences that no family was perfect. If anything, he was more concerned with how Lisa was holding up after what transpired outside as it seemed to have a heavy toll on her. Although he wanted to speak out on it, T-Man couldn’t bring himself to say a word, fearful that it would only bring more discomfort and hostility from her.
“Are you ok?” she whispered softly before looking up at him with dewy eyes.
“I could ask you the same thing.” He said rather deeply. She smiled lightly as she whipped her eyes.
“I’ll be alright. It’s just…a lot on my mind at the moment. It’s not your fault though so don’t even go there. I’m just….” She paused and just shook her head as she turned away. She wanted to share more with him, but realized that this was neither the time nor the place for that.
“We better hurry in before nana gets restless.” She said, looking at the door as if it were a mirror. “Are you ready?”
“Ready when you are.” He replied trying to whisper like her.
She smiled as a familiar vibe washed over her. With a calm breath, she went to turn the knob only to find that the door was already partly opened. Goosebumps trickled down her spine at the mere thought of her grandma eves dropping on them. Slowly, she cracked the door open a little further and looked down the dimly lit corridor.
“Nana?” She said as softly as a snowflake while the two ventured further into the living room.
“[Yes child?].” A voice replied in Spanish. T-man recognized it as the same one he heard moments ago and assumed it must belonged to Lisa’s grandmother. “This is it.” He thought to himself as they walked right from the living room towards what appeared to be the dining area. He could feel his heart begin to race the closer they got to the table. There sitting in the corner was Lisa’s grandmother calmly sipping her tea as she read her newspaper. Lisa knew this was a ruse as nana never read the news paper during the week, and even if she did, she wouldn’t be reading by candle light. They seemed to be spread all over the room, mostly surrounding the dinner table, but a few mounted on the wall beside photos of the family.
For T-Man It felt so surreal, like a scene straight out of a movie. This was the part where the guy meets the stern overly protective grandmother and fails miserably in trying to impress her. Unlike the movies though, he doubted this would end on an awkwardly positive note. He could tell his nerves were starting to get the best of him again as he could feel is heart beat increasing. His hands started to tremble the closer they got, his breath growing shorter with each step. He could hear his inner voice yelling at him.
“Get a hold of yourself man! You haven’t even made it to the table and you’re already fading out? Geez, you’re pathetic. Do yourself a favor kid and don’t embarrass yourself any further by passing out on them. I’m sure they’d just love to take you to the hospital.” He shook his head and came back to reality. Now’s not the time to let his dark side affect him. He took a few deep breathes and tried hide his nervousness behind a smile.
