"Can you pass me that." Sara pointed at a stethoscope.
"This is a stethoscope, it allows me to hear this mans heart, and check his breathing." The older man winked at me as Sara told him to breath in and out.
I looked away and payed no further attention to the patients.
Sara described many things to me as she worked on different patients that had been here for a day or more, making sure they are recovering well. It was all the same.
Stethoscope, check IV, asked if the patient was feeling any discomfort or pain, and then told them that another nurse would be back to check up on them again soon.
All of a sudden there was a big commotion. Sara's head snapped up and was immediately aware of it. She studied it for a second then handed me her clipboard.
"There is one patient left to check, can you go and get started on him? You don't have to do any of the medical stuff, just ask him the questions and go and get some food from the cafeteria for him." Sara said in a rushed tone before leaving. She quickly turned around.
"and stay in that room until I come get you, it could be a while, but I want to be able to find you." with that Sara rushed off before I could protest about staying in a strangers room for who knows how long.
I let out a sigh and looked at the paper. Room 219. I looked up and started my way to the room. I looked down and noticed that Sara had put the stethoscope around my neck.
'When did she do that? Am I that out of it?' I shrugged off the questions and looked at the room numbers on the wall.
210, 215, 218 and finally 219. This is one of the biggest hospital doors I've seen. 'Must be for wealthier people.' I thought to myself. There was a man outside of the door. I recognised him but couldn't place where I've seen him before.
I was too flustered with my next task and the anxiety attack that it was causing to think further about it. He looked at me and took in my uniform and stepped aside.
I opened the door and closed it behind me. The room was dark, really dark. Dark enough to spike my anxiety. I hate the dark and am very uncomfortable in it because of my fear of what could be In it.
I swallowed, making a gulping sound. "Umm. Ex-exuse m-me." I stuttered into the darkness.
"Oh sorry, you can turn on the light." I eagerly searched the walls for the switch.
I tripped on something and cursed under my breath.
"Are you alright?" the voice asked.
It was definitely a males voice, it was also very British, one that for some reason I recognised.
I immediately thought that it could somehow be Sam, a guy from my school that got hurt a couple of days ago. As my thoughts continued to trip over each other the light flicked on.
"ARG!" I said quietly into the sudden brightness.
I tripped again, this time actually falling. Before I could scream, warm arms caught me. I let out the breath I was going to use to scream in a huff. While doing so I sank back a little into the warm arms that held me.
Suddenly remembering that it was a stranger who caught me I straightened, nearly tripping over the man.
"I'm so sorry." I mumbled and then added "and thank you for catching me."
"No problem, I'm glad to have helped." He responded. I slowly looked up through my now messy bangs to see the source of the voice. My heart stopped and I froze. I forgot how to breath.
I shook my head internally. 'If he's in a hospital he doesn't need me to freak out over him. His face blanked when I looked up. 'Oh no! I didn't think I was that hideous in this outfit.' I thought.
