Madeline's p.o.v

I sit in my room, on the edge of the bed, as my bones throb and my skin slowly becomes purple from the day. My thirteen year old brother, Jake, sits beside me. "Maddy," Jake says, "you should really tell mom and dad. They'll help you."

"They won't get it," I say.

"Dad might not," Jake says, "but remember mom's stories about her school days? If anybody will understand, it'll be mom." I'm about to say something to him, when I hear my dad call us downstairs. Racing out of my room, I see my dad standing next to my mom at the foot of our stairs.

"Mom!," I exclaim, "you're back!" Racing down the stairs, I hug my mom tight, causing the air to be forced out of her. I look up at her. "Are you okay? Are you really sick? Do I need to stay home to help you?" My mom chuckles.

"Actually," she says, "that's what we wanted to talk to you about." She looks at my arm. "Maddy why's your arm so purple?" I quickly shift my arm

"Nothing! Marker mishap!," I say quickly. "What's the news?"

I stare in shock at my parents. "Y-You're what?," I say softly.

"Awesome!," Jake exclaims. "A new sibling!" My head whips around, looking at him in shock. I feel like crying. Instead of saying anything, I turn and run up the stairs. I flop down on my bed and cry into my pillow. I feel the bed dip. All I can think is, forgot to close the door again.
"Maddie?" My mother. "Mads are you okay?" I take in a deep breath and sit up, smiling.
"Yeah mom, fine," I lie. She narrows her eyes at me.
"Come on Maddie don't give me that," she says. "Really, what's wrong?" I turn away from her so she can't see that I'm about to cry.
"Nothing," I say. I cringe as even I hear the sadness in my voice. My mom turns me to face her. I don't look up at her, but instead down at my sheets. My mom's hand accidentally touches the bruise on my arm, and I can't help it, I hiss in pain. My mom's hand wrenches away.
"Maddie! Are you okay?" I nod, breathing heavily from the shock. "Maddie come on please be honest."
"The-The new sibling," I say. "Are you. . .going to get rid of me and Jake after they're born?" My mom wraps her arms around me.
"What? No Maddie no! Why would we do that?"
"Well we're not your real kids-"
"Maddie the fact that you're adopted doesn't change my feelings for you. I raised you in this house." This is true. I was here before my first birthday. Jake had literally just been brought from the hospital. We were supposed to be twins but. . .well I don't know what went down but it probably wasn't pretty.
I know nothing about my biological parents. Names? Backstory? Why I was brought to the orphanage in the first place? Nope. Not a word has been breathed about them to me.
I look up as I realize my brother standing at the door. He looks at me. "Sorry Mads," he says, "but I'm doing this because I love you." Jake then turns to my mom. "Mom there's something Maddie hasn't told you."
