"Aw look at you, Luke" My mum said, fixing my hair for me.
"You're gonna be the best looking guy in the school" My dad beamed. I groaned, rolling my eyes.
"Look at our baby, Andy" My mum sniffed. "He's all grown up"
"I know, Liz" My dad wrapped an arm around her.
"Oh! Before I forget" My mum ran back into the house, returning moments after with a brown paper bag. "This is your lunch, ok? I put a dollar in there so you can get some milk"
"You can ask one of the big kids where to do that" My dad added.
"You remember your phone number? I wrote it down for you just incase. Put it in your pocket, I don't want you to loose it" My mum handed me a piece of paper.
"Are you ready?" My dad asked.
"I think so" I nodded.
It my first day in American high school. I guess it's natural for parents to cry on their kids first day of school. But, you know, this usually happens when the kid is 5. Until today, I was homeschooled. I know what you're thinking 'home schooled kids are freaks'. Or that were weirdly religious or something. But my family is totally normal.
Except for the fact that both my parents are actually teachers, and we've spent the last few years in Australia. I had a great life, but then my mum was offered a job at a top private school here in America, so it was goodbye Australia and hello high school.
Walking into my first classroom, I looked at my fellow student body. They were nothing like the kids I grew up around in Australia. I found someone sat on their own.
"Hi, I don't know if anyone told you about me. I'm a new student here, I'm Luke Hemmings" I stuck my hand out for the boy to shake.
"Talk to me again, and I'll kick your ass" The boy replied. He seemed nice.
I looked at the spare chairs, making my way over to one.
"You don't wanna sit there. Kaitlyn Harper's boyfriend is gonna sit there" a boy exclaimed. I nodded slowly, finding another seat.
"He farts a lot" he said again as I walked towards another seat. I walked towards the front of the classroom, knocking into someone completely.
"Oh my god, I'm so sorry" I exclaimed as I turned around.
"It's not you, I'm bad luck" she exclaimed.
"Miss Howarth?" A pupil spoke. I now knew that this was my teacher, and I had just knocked into her, her coffee flying all over her shirt.
"My t-shirt is stuck on my sweater, isn't it?" Miss Howarth asked as she attempted take off her sweater, her vest on show. God, I felt awful. "Fantastic"
"I'm sorry" I bit my lip nervously.
"Well" Miss Howarth spoke as she sat behind her desk, throwing her soaked jumper on the floor. "I just wanted everyone to know that we have a new student joining us from Australia, welcome" she turned to a random classmate.
"I'm from Michigan" The boy exclaimed.
"Brilliant. Well, his name is Lucas Hemmings. I'm guessing that's you" She asked as she turned to me.
"That's me" I said, waving a little. "It's actually just Luke"
"Well, welcome Luke" Miss Howarth gestured to the chair behind the guy who farts a lot. I took my seat as she began her Math lesson.
The first school day was a blur. A stressful, surreal blur. I got in trouble for the most randomest things. In one of my classes I got up to use the restroom. The teacher asked me where I was going. "Oh, I have to go the bathroom" I replied. He asked me if I had a lavatory pass, which I replied no, and asked if I could take one. "Nice try, have a seat" he replied.
I never lived in a word where adults didn't trust me, where they were always yelling at me. Don't read ahead! No green pen! No food in class! It was different. Different to what I was used to being home schooled. I had lots of friends in Australia, but so far, none in Evanston.
After a hard, gruelling day of not knowing literally any body, eating my lunch in a bathroom stall and getting bumped into without even an apology, I made it home. I opened the door and threw my backpack on the floor.
"Hey! How was your first day?" My mum asked, washing some dishes.
I simply gave her a look. A look that I never wanted to give her again because it literally hurt my face. And with that I went upstairs and shut my self up in my room for the rest of the night. Who knew high school would be so hard?
