Zayn's lullaby

Josiah carefully supported Zayn into the kitchen and sat him down in a rocking chair , with a soft pillow behind his back and a warm quilt over his lap. The kitchen was large and very old fashioned and he wanted to make sure Zayn was comfortable and not in a draft. Zayn looked around with great interest at the large scrubbed table with long benches either side, the big  wood fuelled range that Katy used for cooking. Near the chair was a cradle on rockers. Zayn peeped in and found that a small baby stared back at him with owl like eyes. Zayn smiled and the baby smiled back then hiccupped softly.

"That's our little Ben. He's nine months old but very small as he was born too early. Fortunately the modern medicine saved both  him and Katy as we were able to get to the town in time. He'll catch up and the good news is that he doesn't have Usher's. I can't convince Katy that the children are not being punished because she is sinful. Faulty genes mean nothing to her, it's the punishment for sin in her eyes.

Well, I need to work so I'll come back in an hour and help you to bed. If you need me before hand just call for Aaron. He can hear and he'll come get me" Josiah waved as he went out the door

Zayn stretched out his foot and used it to gently rock the cradle. The baby stayed content for a time then began to whimper  which made Zayn panic. What the devil was he meant to do as Katy wasn't in sight and she'd not hear anyway. He called softly for Aaron but got no response. Zayn gingerly pushed his quilt aside and carefully bent to pick up the crying infant. He sat down again wincing slightly at the pulling feeling in his side. What should he do, he wasn't used to children this small. This is something Louis was good at, not Zayn, and he wished Louis was here to tell him what to do. But Louis wasn't and even if he was, he'd hate Zayn so much he wouldn't talk to him. And he deserved it, thought Zayn bitterly. He walked out and deserted the boys. He hadn't meant to hurt them, it just happened and it couldn't be undone. Just like the damage between him and Perrie couldn't be erased. Katy's tweet popped into his head " You do the best you can at the time you do it and leave the rest to God". Zayn sighed, she was right. He couldn't alter the past and he had done what he thought was best at the time.

Looking down at the crying little boy in his arms, he set the chair rocking and did the one thing he knew he could do, he sang softly. He smiled rather riley to himself when he realised he was singing "Same mistakes' . Very appropriate, he thought, as the baby , lulled by Zayn's beautiful voice, sniffed and snuffled back to sleep.
