Reach; May 13th 2552-
"You knew this was going to happen, didn't you!?" She yelled at me from across the room.
"No! I swear to you-"
"No, you swore this WOULDN'T have happened! And now you swear you did so on something else?" She lowered her voice," No, you know what? Get. Out. Just- get out."
"Baby-" I didn't know what to say. She didn't give me a reason to fight back...but was there even a reason to do so? Or do we fight back because we want something...because we're told?
I swore that I wasn't going to join the marines...but I did anyway. Because I was told to fight.
"What. Is "baby" your answer to everything? No! I'm done with this," She said after I stood there like an idiot for a few seconds.
"No!" I suddenly got an idea, one that might literly get me killed. I checked my pocket- still there.
"What's in your pocket?" She asked with an attitude, but with obvious intrest.
"Come with me!" I grabbed her hand before she could decline. I rushed her downstairs and into the car. I started it and drove as fast as I could through the city to her favorate restaurant. We hurried inside-her not restraining anymore, obviously intrigued- and I didn't even wait for a waiter. We went inside, found a seat, and sat down.
"Hey! Get in line!" Someone chased us.
"And wait? They can wait. The military can wait. But this can't." I got on one knee, took out the ring, and said," I know life's been rough on us, and I'm not the most perfect person, but, Lindsay Millian Gill, will you marry me?" I looked up. She started tearing up.
"I- I don't know..." She said quietly, and walked out of the restaurant. I stood there, stunned. It felt like I had just got slapped in the face- no, it felt worse than that. I...couldn't even explain the pain.
I sat there on the ground with everyone staring at me for twenty minutes, then finally became conscience of the situation. The waiter who told me to go in line was sitting in Lindsays seet just staring at me. Everyone else went back to their conversations but cast the occasional glance. The place seemed more packed than usual, and I was the main event...even though I was doing nothing to entertain them. That's just the cruel truth about humanity. They find the humor in the worst humiliates.
I stood up; my face so red I felt it melting off, and walked out of there. I didn't want to spend a second longer than I already had.
It was already dark, and Lindsay had taken the car back. Great. I had to walk seven miles to the house- our house. That was going to take me three hours. I looked down and realized that I was still in my work uniform- a camouflage one peice with combat boots. I must've looked so dumb proposing in this!
I walked all the way home and when I got back, the car wasn't in the drive way. Wonderful, I bet I could walk to the nearest bar and see her a mile away. That's how stunningly beautiful she was...and other guys noticed, too. But tonight, she was some other guys lady, not mine. I skimmed my hair with my hands to slick it back, an old habbit of mine. It was only half an inch, no more, but it was there.
I walked inside as quietly as possible. Also a habbit. I never liked to be noticed so like always, I was as quiet as possible.
I heard crying as I opened the door. Someone was here? I discreetly closed the door and walked over to the source of the sound. I walked in the living room to see Lindsay laying down on the couch with her favorite blanket I had given her two years ago. Our couch was double the length of her so she left alot of space for me to sit down. Instead, I waited a few moments to think if it was a good idea or not, and instead of leaving, I did it: I sat next to her. She didn't look up, still crying as hard as she could. I felt horrible; my heart was sunken past the point of no return. I didn't know what to do. I took a risk and picked her up, holding her in an embrace.
"Why? Make up your mind," She said in one breath, then sniffed. She hugged me back. She wiped her eyes and let go. We sat there in silence next to each other. She looked beautiful crying, unlike most people.
She reached in my pocket and took out the box with the ring. She opened it and her face turned to disbelief.
She gasped," Micheal! This is beautiful! How'd you know?"
"I heard you the other day. You know, I actually hear you when you talk to me," I said with a smile.
"Awww. Micheal. Thank you!" She said. I looked at her. Her face was perfect. No bumps or anything loitering on it. I smiled and hugged her again. I smelled her hair- the best smell, better than anything on Earth.
I pulled away; her smile brightening my night. As bright as the stars in the clear sky. Her long blone hair shining the room. It was curled, just the way I liked it. Her sky blue eyes were red from crying and so was her cute nose; somehow she made it a good look. Needless to say, she had a great body. But I was taught differently. My father told me and emphasized greatly that only look inside. Beauty didn't matter on the outside.
In fact, I avoided her as much as possible because I had thought that she was the office slut looking for a one night stand. Turns out, I was the one asking if she was ready each night.
She was the best decision I've ever made. And I was this close to her walking out on- actually, it was really the opposite. I had to own up to that.
"Lindsay, I swear to you, I hadn't thought through this. I made a mistake and I'm here to fix it. I just want you to know that am ready for a real commitment. I'm serious this time." I said, not loosing eye contact with her.
"I know, Michael. I believe you," She says, hugging me," Yes."
"Yes?" I asked. I thought it was an answer to my proposal, but didn't want to get my hopes up.
"Yes! We're getting married!" She said more excitingly, tears of joy this time, streaming down her face. I wiped her eyes and kissed her. My heart fluttered- I was so exited! I couldn't stop smiling!
"Lindsay, I love you so much!" I say and hug her.
"I love you too!" She says, accepting my hug,"Micheal, I have a request," she says.
"What is it?"
"Tonight is the night that we decide to get married. This is another step- a major step- in our relationship. Our first night was also a major step in our relationship. What did we not do to not scrue up our progress that night?"
"Awwe man!" I whined, smiling,"I know where this is going. I love you for that. You're rational, no matter how much I disagree. But, you're right..."
"I know," She smirked.
Her idea: we wern't going to do it tonight. The guys were going to make fun of me for the rest of my life for this, but it didn't matter. What mattered was: I was going to marry the love of my life some day. I smiled at her, she smiled back...this was the woman I was going to marry!
"Lindsay?" I said, remembering something," Where's the car?"
"I let Emily borrow it," She said.
"Okay," I said. I liked Stephanie. Most of her friends I didn't, but she was cool. Not annoying (as much as the others), trustworthy, and, surprisingly helpful! When Lindsay needed help that I couldn't do, Stephanie was there. They were friends since sixth grade. She's actually how we met. Anyway, I was fine with her having our car...anyone else, no.
"Okay. Are you okay with that?" Lindsay asked. Usually she did this when she was mad at me. She probably did it for that reason tonight, but I didn't care.
"Nah, that's okay," I said instantly, smiling.
"Okay," She kissed me.
