The next day we threw boxes up into the attic and cleaned up the mess to get ready for the Herods to come over.
I had already fixed up my room so me and their sister, Katelynn, who is two years older than me could hang out.
I went to my mirror and checked my reflection. I was wearing my usual black leather jacket with jeans and a black NYC sports jersey shirt.
I braided my thick hair and laces up my combat boots to go outside.
I walked out and jogged along the acre torwards the shed in the back. It was big, bigger than my room. I hadn't even looked in it yet.
There were Christmas decorations and tables from my grandma's old house before she moved in with us.
I sat on one of her old chairs and noticed some books in a box in the corner. One was Harry Potter. I thought I lost that. My mom probably hid it because my grandma can't stand Harry potter. She says it's a demon, but I love it.
I pulled it out and dusted it off.
I opened the book but I couldn't read. My thought filled about tonight and going to back to school tomorrow. I closed the thick cover and sighed.
Then the shed door slowly opened and my brother, Mark who is 9, stepped in.
"Hey they are here," he said. Him and Alex are only a year apart because Alex is old for his grade and they get along well. Him and Adam get along ok too.
"Yay," I said not very excitedly.
I set the book down and walked out of the shed and turned of the lights. It was almost dark outside now. The moon was dimly shining and there was a purple orange and pink sunset over the fence.
I trudged to my house with my hands in my denim pockets. Why did I feel so nervous and excited?
As I walked in they all were standing there, Adam in his usual sports clothing and spiked hair, Alex in his denim jeans and t shirt, Katelynn in a t shirt from church camp, a hoodie, and jeans. I wondered why Adam would chose to wear that in this cold weather. He would freeze to death.
"Hey," Katelynn said smiling.
"Hi," I smiled back.
The adults went to talk in the kitchen and Mark and Alex went to play in Marks room. Luke followed them. Adam just kinda stood there wondering what to do for a while before following my brother into his room.
"What do you wanna do?" I asked her.
"Um I don't know," she sighed. Me and Katelynn get along really well but I didn't have anything to do since a lot of our stuff was still packed and our tv wasn't working yet.
"I'll be right back I gotta go to the bathroom," I said awkwardly.
"Kay I'll be out here," she replied.
I went to our small bathroom and looking in the mirror. I tucked a few strand into my braid and sighed. Adam didn't even say hi. And I'm crazy to have wished he would.
I walked out and Katelynn was laughing and talking with the adults. Don't get me wrong me and her are great friends but sometimes she talks to the adults. So I sat on the couch and pulled out my phone.
No messages. Nothing to do. I sighed.
Then the door opened to the boys bedroom and out came the boys.
Adam nodded at me. Wow considerate greating.
"Lets play hide and seek," Mark suggested.
"Partners," Alex added," I call Mark!"
"Well who am I with?" Adam asked.
"Shelby play with us," Mark ordered.
A chance to be Adams partner in hide and go seek at night. I didn't hesitate.
"Ok," I stood up and walked over to them.
"So I guess we're partners," he smiled.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"We hide first," Adam said. Mark and Alex groaned.
"Fine," Mark sighed.
Mark and Alex went to count in the boys bedroom.
"Lets hide outside," Adam suggested.
"What? It's dark out there," I complained.
"Scared?" He smirked,"Don't worry come on."
I followed him outside and he gestured for me to follow him. So I did.
We walked to a tall tree and he stated climbing and so did I. I am proud to say that I was higher than him.
After a while of waiting Mark and Alex came opened the door and walked out. Their eyes scanned the ground but they didn't even check the sky.
The walked right past us and I quietly sighed.
After a while of waiting Adam made a noise to get their attention and they found us. We hopped down and now it was their turn to hide. We went inside and counted to 100 and then went outside.
We took my phone for a flashlight this time. We looked around and finally found them hidden on the side of the house. Then it was our turn again. The boys went inside. We wanted to hid outside but we didn't want them to know that so we opened an closed the door once they were inside so they would think we came in and then ran off into the darkness.
"Where do we hide?" I asked.
"Follow me," he said and I did. We went to the fence that separates our yards.
"Climb," he whispered.
"What? No that's not fair!" I refused.
"Just come on ok? I need to get something," he started to climb the fence and hesitantly so did I.
We hauled ourselves over and ran to his house. The door was surprisingly unlocked.
"What are we doing?" I asked.
"We're going in," he said as if the answer was obvious.
"My cousin said I should never go alone in a house with a boy," I argued.
"Don't be scared I just need my gun," he said.
"What?!" I exclaimed.
"Relax I need my BB gun so we can fire in the opposite direction for a distraction." He explained.
"No," I refused.
"Please we are running out of time. Luckily we distracted them with that door trick," and with that we walked into his house. It was lit by one light so it was dim. Their tow dogs, Lucy who was a big Brown lab mix, and ozzy who was mostly Pomeranian, came up and sniffed us.
In the dim light we couldn't see well and Adam stumbled, knocking over the dogs water bowl.
"Crap," he cursed," No time to clean it up we gotta go."
"What about the distraction?" I asked.
"I just remembered that my gun is out of BBs."
"Ugh you idiot," I snapped.
"Sorry Geez," he said. We walked out of his house and fan to the fence. We peeked through a hole in the fence. The boys weren't out there. They must be looking inside.
We climbed over.
"The shed," I said instantly. We ran over to it and closed the door behind us. It was dark, you couldn't see anything but pitch black.
We hid behind from what we could see was a table. We were so close I could feel his body heat radiating off of mine.
"It's dark," he whispered.
"Nice observation, Einstein," I said sarcastically.
I looked over at what I could see of his body. His face was turned torwards mine. Too close. I looked away.
"I'm getting claustrophobic I'm gonna move," I stumbled over chairs and almost faceplanted.
"Smooth," he whispered sarcastically.
"Shut up," I said. I bleeped behind a big box. We waited there in the dark for a while.
"I'm bored," he sighed.
"Yeah," I agreed.
I heard foot steps coming to me so I stood up. I could see his silhouette in front of me.
"Uh Shelby what's that behind you?" He asked his voice shakey. I looked, there was nothing. And when I turned back around he said "Boo!" And nearly scared the crap out of me. Only when I turned around did I realize how close we were again. Our faces were inches apart. I always think about what would of happened if I kissed him right there, in that dark shed on that November 1st night.
"They aren't gonna find us, we should go," I started to walk away.
"No," he grabbed my wrist," Stay for a little while."
I couldn't say no.
We one else down next to each other.
"So you and Bailey are like best friends now?" He whispers.
"Of course!" I whispered back.
"Remember that time that I came over to your old house to swim and she found a wooden spoon that Luke was playing with and started beating me with it?" He laughed.
"Yes," I laughed too.
"I still have bruises," he joked. We kept laughing.
"She told me a long time ago," he said after we stopped laughing.
"Told you what?" I asked.
"That you have a crush on me."
"When?!" I exclaimed. Luckily he couldn't see me blush in the dark.
"In fifth grade," he said. I could see his white smile in the dark.
"Oh well that was a long time ago maybe I don't like you anymore," I lied.
"Maybe?" He said suspiciously.
"Yeah," I said.
We sat in silence for a while.
"Ok let's go they aren't coming," I ordered.
"Fine let's go," he followed me out into the darkness.
We went into the house. Mark and Alex were still looking for us.
"We thought you were inside! We heard the door!" Mark exclaimed.
"Tricked ya!" Adam smiled.
"We were in the shed," I admitted.
"What we're you doing in the shed?" Alex joked.
"Ew shut up!" I shoved him.
Adam said nothing.
"Well your turn to hide," I said.
"Nah we're bored we're gonna play Minecraft on the laptop," Mark said. And they walked away into Mark's room leaving me and Adam alone. I glanced over at Katelynn. She was laughing at something my stepdad said. She looked happy. I decided to go to my room. I went in and shut the door. I sat at my spinny office chair and sighed.
Then the door opened and Adam walked in and sat down on my beanbag.
"Um excuse me? First of all do you know how to knock? Second of all you can't just walk in here! And third GET OUT!" I pointed at the door.
"Lets watch tv I hate Minecraft," he said ignoring me.
"Fine what do you wanna watch?" I asked turning on Netflix on my Wii.
"Kickin it," he chose.
I turned it on and sat down on my other bean bag next to him.
"My favorite is Jerry," he smiled as the characters acted like his usual dumb self.
"Cause he's just like you? Dumb and self centered?" I joked.
"No cause he's funny. And that too," he admitted.
We laughed at the tv for a while. Every once in a while when he was locked in to the show I would glance at him. His smile looked brighter up close, and you could see hints of brown in his black hair.
Then I heard a knock on the door.
"Come in," I yelled.
"Hey what are you guys watching?" Said Mrs. Susan Herod, his mom as she opened the door.
"Kickin it," he said without his eyes leaving the tv.
"Ok well I hate to be the one who says this but Adam, honey it's time to go home," She sighed.
He groaned loudly," Fine!"
He stood up and so did I. We walked out and I said bye to Katelynn.
"Bye Adam," I waved as he walked out. He piveted on his foot and waved casually and turned back around torwards his house.
I walked back to my room and turned my tv off. I threw myself onto my bed and screamed into my pillow. I pulled out my phone. A text from Bailey.
What are you doing? It read
Just finished one of the best and weirdest nights of my life. With guest star, Adam Herod. I replied.
I need details tomorrow at school! Goodnight! She texted back.
K night love you I plugged in my phone and changed into an old vbs t shirt and gym shorts and took off my socks and boots. I unbraided my hair and took out my contacts. Then I brushed my teeth and got into bed.
I remember replaying moments in my head that night. And after I drifted off, I dreamt of this night.
