Chapter Five

After school the next day, I head down to the sanctuary where we have play practice with my script. Bailey walks with me. She got the part of Hilary-Ann, the class president, she's proper and bossy, and well- not Bailey.
"Ugh I can't believe I got this part!" She growls.
"Hey I'm not nearly as cheerful as Savannah! But that's the thing about acting! You have to be someone else!" I say.
"Whatever," she shrugs. We walk into the sanctuary and Mrs. Herod smiles at us.
"Hey ladies! Ready for the first practice? We're just gonna read through it today," she is setting up chairs In a circle.
"Yup," I nod. We walk to the chairs and Adam, Katelynn, and a kid named Noah Barnes, are already sitting there, ready to go.
"Who are we missing?" Mrs. Herod asks.
"Um, Cady, Dawson, Babette, Sarah, and Breanna," I list.
"Where are they?" She asks.
"Here they are," Noah says. Sure enough Sara, Breanna, and Cady walk in. And Dawson comes in behind them.
"Where's Babette?" We all ask.
"She had to go home, She had plans, she'll be here tomorrow," Sarah explains. Sarah is a nice girl. She's small and has a squeaky voice and thin brown hair. But she's a pretty good actress.
"Ugh! Well let's get started," Mrs.Herod sits down and we all pull out our scripts.
"So the play is basically a game show, called Fact or Fiction. It's all Christmas trivia and two schools are competing to win. The two teams are the lions and the eagles. On the lions we have Joy, who is a depressed cheerleader, being played by Katelynn, then we have Hilary Ann, the class president, being played by Bailey," everyone chuckles at this," and then we have Rachel, the genius, being played by Babette who isn't here obviously, and Zack who is the skateboarder, being played by Dawson. Then for the eagles we have Mia the shy girl, and then Jimmy the class clown who's being played by Noah and then Anthony or Tony who is the 'cool' guy being played by Adam and then Savannah, who is the hyper, talkative girl being play by Shelby," everyone nods along.
"And sing this a musical as you all know, we have music, and solos. So Shelby, and Cady will get solos along with the introduction solos you all get in the beginning. Got it?"
"Got it," we all say. I'm surprised she didn't give Adam or katelynn a solo because those are her kids.
"Oh and Breanna and Sarah play the two game show girls who talk about the prizes and everything, they're names are Holly and Ivy. Then we have the game show host, Blink Hostalot who is being played by my husband and your principal, Pastor Adam." It always made me laugh that Adam and his dad have the same first name because we all get really confused.
"So how many lines do I get?" Breanna asks.I love Brianna but she's kinda a brat. She is very selfish. And all she ever doe is make googly eyes at Adam, and so does Sarah. I may like him but I'm way more focused on my acting.
"I don't know honey," Mrs herod says.
"Ugh" she growls through her braces. She flips her blonde hair and rolls her blue eyes.
"And do we have rehearsal every day?" Noah asks. Noah is a nice enough guy. He's in katelynns grade. He's really funny and great for his part.
"Besides Friday's," Mrs. Herod says and we all groan
Cady raises her hand slowly. I'm surprised she even signs up for this play. She's so shy. But at least she is playing the shy girl.
"Yes cady?" Mrs Herod asks.
"Do I have to do a solo?" She almost whispers.
"It's in the script honey," she says. I know she's not psyched about it either.
Dawson just sits staring into space. He's just like his character, addicted to skateboarding, chill and not too outgoing, kind of a wallflower.
"Shouldn't we sit by our team members?" Adam asks.
"Yes good idea," Mrs herod agrees. I stay where I am but Bailey moves to the other side, so guess who sits right next to me...
Bailey smirks at me," aw the love birds," she jokes an makes a heart with her hands. I walk up and grab her by the shoulders and shake her.
"Shelby sit down!" Mrs. Herod orders.
I go back to my seat next to Adam and open my script.
We read through a few scenes before Mrs. Herod says it's time to go. So I grab my backpack and shove my script in there.
"Hey, I'm riding home with you because my mom has to stay for worship practice for church and my dad does too," I look up and its Adams warm brown eyes that I'm looking into.
"Oh," I gulp," Ok well Mark is riding home with Jadon so it will be just me and Luke. Let's go pick up Alex and where's your sister?" I along my bag over My shoulder.
"Actually Katelynn is going to Haleys house for a while tonight and Alex wanted to stay with my mom and dad because he's a baby and watch so it'll be just us and Luke," he explains.
"Great," I say unenthusiasticly.
He follows me out the door. K check my phone an I have a message from my mom.
Already in the car. Bring Adam he's riding with us. I got Luke already.
I quickly reply, I know, on our way
I noticed he's reading the messages from over My shoulder.
I punch him in the shoulder.
"Nosy!" I snap.
"Race you," he says and we take off to the other end of the building, but he's fast, really fast, so I'm behind.
"Walk!" One of the teachers yells.
We slow down until we turn the corner an then start running again. We run into the parking lot to my mom's usual parking spot and climb into the middle seat. He sits I'm the middle of me and Luke and I sit by the door.
"Were you running in the school?" My mom starts the engine.
"Maybe," I laugh.
She sighs.
"You guys are cute," I hear her whisper. She turns on the radio and "Thinking Out Loud" comes on.
"Oooo turn it up I love this song!" He starts to sing with his smooth voice. I know this was his favorite song. I sing it with him. My mom turns up the volume. Me him an Luke sing and we laugh at what Luke says when he can't understand the lyrics.
I look out the window and listen to the song. Oh if the girls at school found out...
