Chapter 2

Ashley POV

My alarm went off, telling me that it's already 6 in the morning. I stretched while my mind went back to what happened last night. It's what I hate most more than death, to be sexually violated without having a chance to fight back. A few minutes more and I would not have been able to save the woman last night.

I pushed the thought away to prepare for another busy day.

My name is Ashley Quinn and I live with my Grams, she is not my real grandmother by blood though. I never met my real grandparents. She just found me in one of the darkest period of my life. It's only the two of us against the world now. We live in Oahu, actually she runs a small inn at the second floor of our cabin-like house and a restaurant at the first floor. I, on the other hand, run errands for her. After 5 years of living with her, we've become really close. I am now saving up for college. Also, I don't have a lot of friends my age, most of my pals are cops since I basically worked as a cop in our island, catching the bad guys. Lastly, I hate men. I'm not really sure about the reason. There's just that hatred for them in me.

The door to my room opened a little, revealing Grams in her working clothes which includes a dress and apron.

"Dear, are you ready yet?", she asked.

"Just a minute. Do I really have to wear this dress? You know, I'm only going to the supermarket." She is asking me to wear a yellow summer dress.

"But of course! What if prince charming is there?" I giggled at her answer. She's 65 and she still believes in fairytales.

"Okay, fine." Oh well, I’ll just wear it with my sneakers.

"Hmm...check, check, check" It seems I already have everything. Oh wait, we can't forget bacon. I was still scanning the food aisle to check if I've forgotten anything when I bumped into another push cart.

"Oh, I'm sorry", I said.

She looked up and stared at me, it was becoming a little awkward for me so I cleared my throat.

"Do I know you?", I asked.

She answered, "Ash? You're Ash, right? The beach police. The one who saved me last night."

I laughed. "Yes, I'm Ash, the beach police. It's a silly name actually. I don't know where it came from though." I extended my hand, expecting a handshake but instead, she pulled me towards her for a hug.

"It's so nice to finally meet you! I didn't get to say thank you last night since you were already gone by the time I finished making my statement to the police. You look really cool with the twisting of the arm and self-defense and everything. Did you take karate classes or something?"

She talked really fast but I smiled at her friendliness.

I laughed softly at her remarks. "Thanks for the compliment and yes, I had classes before when I was a kid and I try to practice every weekend until now. Anyway, are you having a vacation here?"

"Actually, we had a taping here yesterday but I plan on taking a break from my work for now and have a vacation here. I'm really stressed with my job and I feel that I'm not happy with it anymore. Besides, the place is gorgeous." She babbled on and I just smiled at her talkativeness.

"Sorry, but I'm kind of in a rush. It's really nice to meet you…?"

"Oh yeah. I'm Vanessa. I'm sorry I really like to talk a lot . Actually, everyone says that it's a disease or some sort... Sorry, I should really stop talking now." She smiled shyly.

"It's okay. Let's just pay for these stuff first and if you're not too busy, you can come with me for to our inn/restaurant for a breakfast and hang out for a while. Where are you staying by the way?"

We paid for our groceries and headed towards our restaurant, eating breakfast while getting to know each other. She said she just got back from New York after packing her things for this vacation.

"I didn't know you owned the place where I almost got raped.", she laughed.

"Oh yeah, we do. The bastard last night was actually staying here. He was a good guy but maybe a bad drunk."

She rolled her eyes. "Obviously. Actually, I'm looking for a place. Do you still have any available rooms?" she smiled.

"Yeah, we do. The business is actually not looking so good. Maybe it's because hotels and other establishments have been built here since the island started getting famous. I'm actually afraid that we might lose the place. It's really sad."

We got to know each other a bit more and I helped her move in her things. She also helped me do some chores. I can see that she's really kind. She even offered to lend me money and said that I don't have to pay it since I saved her. I told her that I don't ask for something in return when I help so I turned down her offer again.

During dinner, she seems preoccupied as she left for bed early. Around 10 in the evening, I was reading a book when she barged in. I didn't mind though since we're kinda close now. She looks pretty excited. Hmm.. I wonder what's up.

She's jumping up and down now. "Okay, seriously, are you on drugs or on a sugar rush?" I asked her jokingly.

She giggled. "Neither! But guess what, I've found a way to help you financially without you having to feel guilty for borrowing from me."

I looked at her, confused.

"Okay, don't get mad but I made a few phone calls and talked to my connections. And there's actually a director who seemed interested with your story! Annndddd, they are willing to give big bucks in exchange for it."

My eyes nearly bulged out of its sockets. "WHAAT? Sell my life story?"
